I have a two year old rotweiller and he is hard to control. I don't believe in hitting animals, but I don't know how to discipline him. I saw the dog whisperer for the first time the other night, does this work?

Some of his techniques work. However, as they state on the show, don't try them yourself without the aid of a professional.

However, I do have one story. I don't have a dog, but across the street there's a small dog who sits in the window and barks at anything on the street. In the past I've tried "Quiet!" or talking to him soothingly, without success.

The other day I tried that loud "tsch!" noise that Cesar makes, and the dog shut up instantly. It may have been coincidence, but there ya go.

Yes and No. While Cesar Milan's Dog Whisperer program does provide alot of good information, you can't assume it will work with all dogs. And as Cesar often points out, it's not always the dog's fault there is a behavior problem.. but more often it's caused by what the people are doing in interacting with the dog.

Cesar's big thing is "calm, assertive behavior".. and this is true. The way you approach and handle your dog has a great influence on how he will react. If you are scared and scream, he will sense your tenseness and could react aggressively. If you want the dog to treat you like you are in control, you have to be in control.

Rotties are very good listeners when properly motivated. If you have trouble getting your Rottie's attention, small food treats can be a great help. This is something Cesar never uses, but for beginners it can be a great help to keep the dog's attention. Do not rely on this though, as you will either end up with an overweight dog or one that gets tired of listening to you once the treats are no longer offered.

The main thing you need to remember is to be consistent and firm. Rotties have a stubborn streak, but will be just as willing to respond to you as any dog provided they see you as someone worthy of respect. If you don't have a bond with your dog, he'll never listen to you.

Yes, they do work, but one should be very careful with large dogs if they don't have much experience. For example, alpha rolling a large dog that doesn't take to it easily can be EXTREMELY dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. Especially if you do not have the temperament to follow through. (Note: I don't mean to offend here, after all every one is different. Just like any other difference, some people are just not meant to handle dominant dogs. Ideally, the person handling the dog should be more dominant than the dog). I would suggest taking the dog to obedience classes. Shop around for the trainer that best matches your personality and your dogs. This would help you get the dog under control. Finally, make sure the dog is getting enough exercise.

They work very well actually. The psst noise he makes is just to startle the dog and redirect the attention to the owner. The three fingers he uses on the neck for correction is what the Alpha dog would do if your dog were with a pack of other dogs. You can either correct on the neck or on the rib area.

Using the calm energy also works well. You're dog feeds off of you, picks up on your habits, temperment, tone of voice, physical cues etc. So when you're calm and in control your dog is more secure and will rely on YOU to handle the situation instead of him trying to take control and fill the void of Alpha.

The dog whisperer Ceaser Milan has been working with animal behavior for over 10 years. He's pretty much dedicated his life to the study. He's a wonderful person to pick up pointers from. He spends a lot of time w/ the people on the show however - you could pick up a lot of things from the show but not everything you may need.

All training takes patience and consitancy.

For your rotties I would suggest calling a trainer to come to your home. They will tailor the training to YOUR specific needs instead of following a class regiment.

Good Luck

Cesar has taken the time and effort to observe and get into the personalities of dogs. He has a obvious gift to work with animals as he does! We have worked with 1000s of dogs over the years in our rescue. At one time we had them as one big pack, like he does. Yes, he has valid information on working with dogs and issues, most of which were caused by a owner not knowing what to do. Obviously, the length of each show does not allow for all that may have gone on with the training of each dog.

Rotts are big babies and can be head strong. 2 yrs. old is still a young dog so you can reteach yourself and him. The most important aspect he uses is he takes the time to observe the dog, its behaviour and get into its mind. You have to let your dog know what it is you expect and follow through. Patience. Be consistant as others said here.

Anyone around the dog on a regular basis has to work the program for it to really go smoothly. Or it confuses the dog! And you have to stand your ground and think really positive and in control of situation. Keep watching and learning.

The irony is most all training methods work. The trick is how to apply the training method you choose to use. It does no good to apply any technique 10 minutes after the fact. Learning how to "read" a dog is what very few people will learn on their own, and why enrolling your dog in an O/B class is so important. It is your job to train your dog, it is the instructors job to train you.

It absolutely works. I have been practicing this approach since my dog was a puppy he is now 12years old and is as close to the perfect dog a you can get.

I have never ever struck him or even yelled at him. He can go anywhere off leash, I can leave food out he will never take it even if I am not home. I can leave the front door open and tell him to stay and will and is quite happy doing it.

People in my neighborhood have even commented how well behaved he is and wish their dog was like that.

Hi Dan I myself have not used the dog whisperer's technique but my husband has and it does really work..especially the technique he uses when meeting a new dog where he just ignores the dog and shows no weakness ...And as for your dog If you use his technique the way he says to it should work or heck call the show maybe he can come out himself and help you! Good luck to you.

DIY training, without knowing what you are doing, can be more damaging to the dog's understanding what you are trying to teach it.

Go get you are your dog enrolled in a local obedience class. YOU will be trained how to train the dog.

Just remember, you will only get out of the classes what you are willing to put into them.

They do work great. He really has a way with dogs, he can connect with them. I would suggest that you use his methods, if you have other people in your home, make sure they're all on the same page because if you're doing one thing, and someone else is doing something else, then your dog will suffer.
