I couldn't go to the Post Office here in the US. I had to go to my local Courthouse, they helped fill out the forms, told me where to get the photo taken and then they also helped send it to the correct place to have it processed. They ship it back in about 2 weeks unless you next day air it to them with a next day air envelope back. It isn't hard, just make sure you call them to find out what proof of identity you need.

Most post offices and municipal or county government offices will be able to do the application for you. go to http://www.travel.state.gov/passport

secure an aplication form from the department of foreign affairs.
fill it up and gather all the requirements them submit them all. wait for a couple of days. they will notify you when you can have it
