A Dachshund mix that doesn't bark? Consider yourself VERY lucky. Doxie's are a very yappy breed.

Barking has nothing to do with whether or not a dog has a submissive personality. In fact, the fact that you state that he is independent could mean that he is dominant. It is tough to tell with a puppy. You are very lucky that he is so mellow. I would not allow him to do two things. One is chew things up. A dog cannot differentiate between chewing up the worthless things, and the meaningful things. Give him his toys, and don't allow him to chew anything else up. The other thing, and I do understand that he hasn't done this yet, but just in case, I would NEVER allow a dog to show any aggression. You may also find that leash training could be very useful. Crate training is too, but I understand that some people feel bad. However, look at it this way. Wild dogs have dens. Crates are not used as a punishment, they are used to give the dog a safe place to stay, and serve as a den. They can also help if you have company, the dog ever has to stay at the vets, or travel in an airplane.
As far as him being a picky eater, I may be able to help you with that too. (My two German Shepherds are the pickiest eaters I have ever seen). Try to find a food that your dog likes. However you have to do this carefully, because if you change the food too often, the dog learns if it doesn't eat, you will just find something else. It makes the problem worse. Once you do that, I have recently tried pouring beef broth on the food, and that actually worked pretty well. Iams also makes a gravy that you can pour on. A lot of people recommend mixing in canned food, but that only works if your dog really likes canned food, and they can still pick out the canned food. Most dogs will learn to eat if you only offer the food to them for a certain amount of time a day and then take it away. Once they are hungry, they will eat, and they will learn that if they don't eat it, they are going to be hungry until their next feeding time. Most dogs will eat well once they figure this out. However, my younger Shepherd is the exception. She still wouldn't, and I have a hard enough time keeping weight on her so that is not an option. Some days she just won't eat, but I know her well enough to know what she will and won't eat, and how to entice her.

You are lucky! LOL Puppys tend to follow, but keep you eye on him as he gets older he may tend to bolt on you. When he chews things he is not supposed to have give him a stern no, then take away whatever he is chewing on and then hand him something that he can chew on. If your dog is healthy then I would say that the picky eating is a sign of being spoiled :o) I would pick a food and give him that and ONLY that. He will eat eventually but if he is getting handouts now and then he is going to try to hold out for something better.

Maybe he just doesn't have anything to say yet. Some dogs don't know they are supposed to bark in certain situations. My chihuahua is almost two years old and didn't bark until he was over a year old after his "big brothers" showed him to bark at strangers in front of his house or in his yard. Now he barks at the ringing of the doorbell AND if you ask him if he wants to go out.

hi there, that got here about to my dogs. She has been attacked through different dogs two times. First she become bitten through 1 of two terrier type dogs that stayed close to me, the dogs continually went bonkers at the same time as they observed different dogs and they managed to get to mine and one nipped her on the neck, it become exceedingly chaotic with leads and legs everywhere! 2d time become through a dogs on a walk way, it got here up in the back of us and my dogs were given a fright and growled and the element went psychological or maybe with the very shown actuality that it probably lasted below 2 minutes it felt like hours with my dogs attempting to interrupt out till the owner got here then dragged away mutually with his dogs. My dogs now growls and barks at the same time as a dogs comes as a lot as her and he or she is under no circumstances enable off of the leash now, it particularly is a shame as she loves operating, yet i doesn't take the threat. She used to love to play with different dogs till those attacks got here about. I agree it is not person-friendly at the same time as dogs arise and interior the more suitable climate there's a tremendous number of human beings with their dogs. i do not understand what percentage cases I have had glares and tuts about my dogs growling and snapping, yet when the dogs did not come as a lot as mine, there doesn't be a difficulty. I observed on the internet someplace about colour coding leads, red meant threat, yellow/orange turned right into a caution and eco-friendly meant the dogs become positive. i idea which will be a good idea to enable human beings understand from a distance about your dogs and could be warned to stay away or maybe if. I do undergo in concepts it become purely accessible for more suitable dogs so no longer proper for me. i wish you're taking care of to keep your dogs ok, she will be positive besides if she has an rather delicate way and under no circumstances develop right into a grump like mine!

Not nonsensically he could be deaf or just a mellow dog. I have 2 dalmatians and a minature beagle and my wife and I spoil them rotten, they sleep in bed with us and have their own couch etc. as for the eating he is just a puppy he will be picky for a while if you feed him table scraps he will continue to be picky so just give it scraps once in a while. Good luck

All dogs are different. He will start barking when he's ready, believe me. Some dogs just take longer than others.
