If you mean, "no greatness without a passion to be great", then it means you have to really want it--to be good at it

First off, it's "there is no greatness without a PASSION to be great...."
It means that whatever you do, to do it to the best of your ability, you need to have a passion, a real deep burning drive to do it (and an equally profound love for what you are doing). That kind of energy can make the lesser talented more successful than those more talented who are lazier and less focused.
It brings to mind this quote from Norman Vincent Peale: "If you love your job with enthusiasm, you'll shake it to pieces. You'll love it into greatness."
Go for it!
