The general rule is this: For a average engagement of 6 months to a year, you may ask people to be in your wedding as soon as you'd like after the engagement. For engagements of longer than a year (say two years), you may ask when the wedding is one year away.

Congratulations and good luck!!!

At least 6 months to 1 year after your engagement. You might want to ask people 4 months in advance of the wedding.

As soon as you're sure of who you want to involve. I would recommend at least three months and prefferably six. Keep in mind, that you want to be considerate of the person you are asking and give as much notice as possible. The only downfall to asking too soon is that relationships do change. You may wish that someone was (or was not) included in your wedding a little later on.

As soon as you knwo who you want to ask. You should let them know so they can start planning for it. A wedding is generally expensive and some people may need to save up for it. so go ahead and ask them, that way if they can' then you can begin thinking of a replacement.
Next you need to let them know as soon as a date is set!

Good luck and congrats!

as soon as possible. After fiance proposed to me, and we figured out a date to work with, we then figured out who we wanted in the wedding and as soon as we knew that we asked them about a week or so later.

I recommend as soon as possible. This gives them advance notice to plan their schedule for your big day. It always gives you a chance to see who you really want to be in your wedding party.
"Congratulations", ahead of time.

As soon as you decide who you'd like to be in it you should speak to them. Advance notice is always the best thing.
