three students book into a hotel for the night, they get a three bedded room and the owner charges them £30 and they all pay £10 each.after they have gone to thier room the owner realises that he has overcharged them, the room should have only been £25,so he gives the porter 5 pound coins and sends him to the students room to reimburse them.the porter explains they have been overcharged and gives them the money.cos £5 is a bit awkward to split up 3 ways they each have £1 and give the porter a £2 tip.now the students have each got £1 back, that works out they paid £9 each making £27,with the £2 tip for the porter that makes £29..the question is...where did the other £1 go to make the £30.......hope that makes sense.

There is no other 1, they each got 1 back from 10. since they had paid 30, they have now paid 27 which is the 25 plus 2.

10 pounds paid from 3 people equals 30 pounds
30 pounds minus the 5 pounds equals 25 pounds
so the amount paid was 25 pounds
Each of the three people got 1 pound back
Plus the porter has 2 pounds for a tip.
So 25 pounds paid for the room, 3 pounds returned to the students, plus the 2 pounds for the porter equals 30 pounds
25 + 3 + 2 = 30

They each pay 10 pounds, so they have spent 30 pounds in total. The butler comes along and gives 5 pounds back, so minus 5 = 25 pounds they have spent in total. They decide to give back 2 pounds, so they have spent 27 pounds in total now(25+2). since they each have 3 pounds, add them on and you have the 30 pounds from the beginning.

its just an illusion of the mind.the dollar doesnt go anywhere.they started with 30 and there is 30 left .4 divides differently tnen 3 .so they each would have got back 1 plus change if just the 3 had kept it.that change equals 2 which they gave to the porter instead of making change.

They each paid £9.33. £25 divided by 3 =£8,33 plus £1 given back.It depends how you look at the question, but the maths does not lie.
