About $80 for a very basic return. $150 if you have donations & some normal stuff.
Turbotax is pretty inexpensive and I found a TurboTax Promotion Code here for 25% off: http://www.dealtaker.com/TurboTax-coupon-code-a2068-c.html
But H&R block isn't much better than doing it yourself, since they just basically ask you the same questions the softwares do.

Too much! You're better off using one of the free online tax sites, or if you're not very comfortable with taxes, finding an individual tax preparer. Some of the online tax sites let you e-file for free, and others charge a minimal fee ($15 - $20).

The minimum is 90 and they charge extra for additional forms... but the advantage is that they back their work and get you the maximum legal amount back on your return. If you go to their website, they have a $25 coupon right now too for first time customers... I printed it off and am going to do my taxes today, if you'd like, I can e-mail you later on and let you know exactly how much they charge for everything and how it all works.
FYI, unless you are just doing the 1040ez form, I would suggest having somebody prepare your taxes for you, even though it does cost a little more, it's worth it to avoid being audited.
I did mine the other night... it cost 215 with the coupon... but I had extra forms to do with tons of write offs. It was totally worth it though... I got 3000 back that I wasn't expecting and I'll have my check in a week.

Be very careful with Block. I work full time but my wife is retired, with 3 small pensions and SS. We itemized and had interest/dividends, plus many donations since we downsized. It was not overerly complicated - they see this kind of return every day. The charge started out at $503, but we were able to get it down to $396. The price was complete and utter nonsense. We briefly saw a breakdown of the charges on the screen (they won t print them out of course), and Form 1040 itself was $102. Why so high, Block? All you re doing is entering wages and withholding - the rest of the figures come from separately charged Schedules and worksheets.

It's really a matter of if you are going to use bank products or not. If you efile with software or block or JH you can receive your refund in about 7 days if you direct deposit. It is worth the extra $40 to go to a pro tax place because they will give you audit protection. The downside of going to one of these places is that your return depends on their software questionnaires unless you get a seasoned tax pro. I would call the place of your choice and ask who has been preparing taxes the longest and make an appointment with that person. There are lots of deductions and credits that store bought software will not catch. Also, a seasoned pro can answer all your tax questions and help you in the future. Software tries to do this but it can't match a pro. You can always find a coupon for one of the franchise places or you can call a non-franchise tax prep service in your yellow pages or on superpages.com Good luck!

I used to like H&R Block ,until today. I live in Missouri and filed in Tennessee. I was told that there would be additional fees for filing out of state. REALLY? Since when....... After all the costs I would owe H&R Block more than what I made. Why does it cost near 832.98 dollars to file with these people plus out of state cost.

The Just Charged my Girlfriend 231.00 to do a simple 1040 form (no deductions or anything) + a 35.00 bank fee on top of that. I called them after she got back to see what they would charge me and they said 99.95 maby more depending on what they had to do). I told them it was a simple form with nothing extra (was told 99.95...maby more???). It was a simple 1040...I think that is a bit much. Why bring me in telling me it is 99.95 knowing they are gonna add more fees, why not be honest, I think they ate theives

Depends on how many forms they have to do on your behalf. Generally they start at about $75, I'd say the average is about $120 give or take

Last year my charge was about $100, and it's gone up every year I've used them. I should have just done it myself but I had to declare tips for the first time and was nervous. If you can, definately consider filing online.
