Btw Tourer means a powerful station wagon.

GT - in everything from a Ford GT40 to a Golf GTi stands for "Grande Tourismo" or "Grand Tourer" - the 'i' is if 'injection' - ie. A fuel injection engine & not a carburettor.

Nothing to do with turbos...no petrol Golf ever had a turbo (except Rally versions)

Also. TD = Turbo Diesel, TDCi = Turbo Diesel Commonrail Intercooler, Ti = Turbo Injection or Intercooler

"TI started with Alfa Romeo, putting it as an indication of the humble 1300 Giulietta TI berlina and later used it with the Giulia, it was supposed to mean Turismo Internazionale.
BMW did the same with the 1800 TI in 1964, with the same meaning, as they were clearly targeting the clientele of the Giulia TI.
In 1962 Peugeot introduced a fuel injected version of the 404 and dubbed it TI, Tourisme Injection.
GT has been always used as an abbreviation for Grand Touring/Turismo/Tourisme etc.
GTI for the Golf was the first time that GT and Injection were put together."

I have a GTI and my friends asked me what it stands for, because they thought its stands for Great Turbo Inside. I laughed and explained to them that its Grand Touring Injected.

Tourismo, as in Gran Tourismo or Touring as in Grand Touring.

Grand means its got lots of toys, Touring means it goes like $#!+ off a shovel, and the "I" means its got a fuel injection engine.
