I also have really long hair. I pull a 4-inch section of hair from one side of my forehead to the other near the hairline and secure it with a cute clip, two crossed decorative hairpins, or a barrette. This is sleek and highlights your your eyes.
You can also take a small section from the temples back and pull that straight back and secure it with a small clippy or elastic a la Carrie Bradshaw (Sex and the City). Let the rest hang long and straight down your back. Very cute and sophisticated.
Last look--did you see How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days with Kate Hudson? Well, I have done her twisted upside-down ponytail from that movie to go out and everyone raves. Pull your hair together into a low pony, twist it and flip the ends up pointing towards the top of your head. Secure the pony where you normally would only the ponytail is a twist now with the ends all pretty and spread out above the elastic and against the back of your head.
Good luck!

This might be too late for the "night" in question, but it will help for future situations.

My hair is down somewhere around my elbows. When I want to dress up, I like to take the first few strands on either side and secure them in the back with a pretty clip. This makes my hair look much longer and it keeps it out of my face.

I have long hair also & I usually part it to the side & straighten it. Or you can straighten it & put a cute headband on. Also you can pull your bangs back or the hair where you bangs would be & secure them with a clip or some bobby pins. I hope this helps:) Good Luck!

A slick and long ponytail with hair wrapped around the base. Its chic, and you can add a cute accesory to it, and it also helps keep your hair out of the way

i usually curl out the front part of my hair. kind of like farrah fawcett. it looks greattttt!
i take a big barrel curling iron and roll up the partthat frames my face and the ends of the rest of my hair.
it looks good if you flip it upside down and shake it and then flip it back up. if you know what i mean. if you dont, its okay.
