We switched at age 2, but if your child is trying to get out of their crib themself it is time to switch because of the safety hazard. Our son was pretty easy, we told him to stay in the bed and he did.

When your child is ready, you will See the "ready signs" climbing out of the crib or just trying, When you do make the switch read him a book and explain to him about sleeping in his own bed there are many books about switching beds that is something you can start out with.

I don't think there is a specific age for when your child must be sleeping in a bed instead of a crib. Each child is different. I took the crib out of my son's room when he was about 2 years old. He loved it!! The only problem that I ran into was in the mornings when he wanted to get up and come into my room (because our room's were on the 2nd floor). I put a baby gate up so that I wouldn't have to worry about him accidentially falling down the stair before I got to him. It worked out perfectly.

Put them in a bed when they can get out of a crib. If they can climb out they could hurt themselves. Keeping them in a bed can be tricky. It usually takes a few nights. I just had to sit with my son until he fell asleep the first few nights. Another idea would be to make it a big deal. Talk about how they are going to get a big boy/girl bed. If you haven't already got a bed take them with you.

I switched my 4 year old out because she started to climb out just before she turned 2. I switched my 2 year old out just after she turned 2 because we had another baby. I thought I was going to have a problem with them staying in bed. But, they were so exited to be in a big kid bed that they just staid. I told them they can get out of bed when the sun comes out and their is light in the window. Good luck and have fun!

We put the toddler bed in our child's room a few weeks earlier and began using it for nap times. That way, when the crib was taken away completely it wasn't a complete shock.

when they can climb out or figure out how to open the crib, thats when it is time to go to a bed. It's hard for them to adjust, it take alot of patients and consistancy because they will want to sleep in your bed.....which you shouldn't let happen, it is a bad habit, so just keep putting him back in his bed when ever he gets out, and tell him to stay in it, or punish him if need be.... and if all he does is cry when he is in it, just ignore him and let him cry himself asleep. Cause if you go in there, it will become a habit for them to cry until you appear

About the same time as you begin them on potty training because when they finally get the 'potty' bit - they need to be able to get out of bed by themselves and make it to the bathroom.
