Rectal itching
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Many people have bouts of itching around the anus or rectum. Sometimes it is so severe that it is impossible to keep from scratching. Scratching only makes the problem worse. The itching is usually worse at night or following a bowel movement.
There are many causes of rectal itching. Some include:
over cleaning the rectal area, or leaving dried bowel movement in the area
infections, even a vaginal infection in women
skin disorders, such as psoriasis or eczema
rectal problems like hemorrhoids or fistulas
some diseases like diabetes or liver diseases
some foods that are eaten or
pinworms (most common in children)
Treatment of any diseases such as diabetes or pinworms should be the first line of action. Other measures that may be taken to help this problem should include:
do not scratch
avoid over cleaning the area with soap or excessive rubbing
use wet toilet paper or baby wipes to clean after a bowel movement
pat, do not rub the area when drying
keep area dry with cornstarch or talcum powder that does not have perfume or medications
avoid tight clothes
wear cotton underwear and
avoid using anything that may cause an allergic reaction, including washing powder and fabric softener
Some people may have itching from eating or drinking certain foods. These foods may include coffee, beer, cola, vitamin C tablets if taken in too large doses, spices and citrus foods. These foods should be avoided. If it is not known what specific food is a problem, all of them should be avoided. After several weeks, the foods can be put back into the diet one at a time. If the itching starts again after a specific food, that food should be avoided all the time.
Do not use any medicines unless a healthcare provider suggests them. The provider must be seen any time there is rectal itching that does not go away within a few days. Even with treatment from the provider it can take 4 to 6 weeks for the itching to stop.
