well there are 2 answers to your question. a VISA could mean:
1) a credit card which you may apply in your country of residence. each time when you make purchases, you can choose to either pay by cash or by VISA (the credit card). if you choose to pay by the latter, that will mean that you've bought something on credit. it is very convenient coz you can buy & use your merchandise without having to carry so much cash with you all the time. at the end of the month, the bank will give you some sort like a statement & that's when you have to start paying for the merchandise that you'd bought few weeks back.
the 2nd definition of VISA is:
it's a kind of piece of travelling document/paper that is placed in your passport. a VISA is issued by foreign missions in a particular country. since you're travelling to china, you'll need to go to the china embassy in your country of residence to apply for this VISA. usually you have to pay for the VISA.
VISA is issued to "control" the number of tourists/visitors to a certain country. it'll give information to the immigration officer:
· the purpose of your travel;
· how long you can stay in china and
· the latest date that you can enter china.
hope you have a better idea now. bon voyage!

A visa is a stamp or document that allows the passport-holder entry into a country for a specific purpose and for a specific period of time. Many countries do not require visas, China does.
Go to www.china-embassy.org, look for the links to visas, and they will explain the different type of visas and the requirements pertaining to obtaining a visa, in your case, a tourist visa. Good luck!

A visa is like a permission slip from the country you wish to visit. The reason visas are issued is for the issuing country to keep track of who comes in and out. That is why, for example, you do not have a visa to go to Cananda from the US. Both countries could not care less.
Then the passport is your countries "Official Identifcation" of you. Like when you have a state driver's license that verifies your picture, address and that you can drive in that state, so too, the passport would be like a county's drivers license so to speak of. The country has verified that you are born and are from that country.
So you need one ID or passport from your country. But you will or may need a visa for each country you will to visit if the visiting country requires one.

To travel to other countries you need a visa. A visa is issued by the embassy of the country you wish to visit. The reason for a visa is that it gives the country you wish to travel, the chance to check for a criminal record, links to terrorist organisiations and your potential risk overstaying your stay (illegal migration).
To apply for a visa, you will need a passport issued by your home country.
If you are very new to this, talk with a travel agent and they will assist you with obtaining a Chinese Visa.

go to the chinese embassy online and check the forms you'll need and ID's. then go to the chinese embassy (there's one in manhatan) and give them the forms and your passport and you can come back after lunch and get your passport back with a visa stamp in it that allows you into another country (in this case china).
