There is no definite formula. Police pay varies from department to department. Your county may pay more than one of the cities within that county, and less than another city in the same county. It all comes down to the tax base of the particular municipality, and how corrupt the leaders of that city, county, state are.

the salary isn't high enough no matter where you go. The benefits are usually great though. If you are looking to become a police officer for the money, i suggest a different career. The hours suck, you see the worst of the worst, and get crap from a public you are there to serve and protect. The friends you will make will be some of the best on earth, but you have to do this job because you love it. You won't get rich financially being a cop, but there are many more rewarding aspects. I love my job and would not trade it for the world

There is no set rule, however in general Large Cities pay the most, like LA, Chicago, New York. State and County pay about the same with the "State" taking a slight edge. And of course small towns pay the least.

Highway patrol gets better salary unles county police are corrupt. I live in Missisippi and of course we don't have any of those!

I never became a cop for the money,Benefits are good, retirement is good(were talking large departments). camaraderie is unbelievable. Your have to become a cop only if you want to be a COP, no other reasons. I believe your born into it, almost a calling.
