When they start to expect things. I relized that i was spoiling my son when we would go anywhere and he just expected to get somthing, and would throw a fit if he didnt. Now we only get him things when he earns it. We have alittle chore list. He is only two so there is not much he can do, but for everything he does he gets a sticker, once he has 20 stickers that means he may get a toy. We make him put his toys aways, he takes out the bathroom trash (with a little help), He puts his dirty wash in the hamper, he puts his dishes in the sink after dinner.

I would not know from personal experience, because my husband and I do not go crazy buying the kids toys, etc.
My niece on the other hand tells her mom and dad that they WILL buy her this toy or that toy that she sees on the television or at the store. She has a mother that just cannot say no.
Yes, there should be a limit. My niece has so many toys that you can barely more around in her room to play. Her toys are all over the house. It is crazy. Parents should avoid over-indulging their children out of guilt or anything else. They do not need all the toys and gadget, they need quality time with their parents!

You can never buy to many things a child needs but if its something that your child does not really need a lot of like say toys then there can be a limit. Depending on your child's age toys are not all important until he/she is 4 years and older until then just a small amount is fine. If its clothing children grow out of cloths faster then we adults do so they will need more of that but a selection of sizes is best. Know if its stuff like wipes and diapers or training pants depending on age then yes stock stock stock you will need more then you can handle. Also baby soap and shampoo and lotion all stuff like that is a must to so stock well.

I would have thought that if your child is not nagging at you to buy them something, then maybe you've bought them everything - which would be too much!!!
A child has to learn at a very early age that they will not get everything they want in life, that they have to ask nicely for certain things, earn other things, perhaps save their own pocket money for others and that ultimately there are some things that can never have!

You've gotten some really good answers here. I think for the most part people are right. Another que might be if there is NOT something they are saving their money for. I think it's good for a kid to have to learn the "if I want it, I have to buy it and that means saving my money" lesson. I mean, they have to learn that to prepare them for life later, that's what we have to do as adults.
Good for you for trying to be conscious of this.

If they have no "favorite" toy and they don't take care of any of their things...
If there is too much stuff, nothing will hold their attention for long.
