When I first came across this, I thought that Ipshwitz was really being harsh as all the previous posters said they liked your stuff. After taking a look at your photos, I have to say that I agree with him (though he was still a bit harsh ;) )

Here are some of my suggestions:

Do some research on composition and the rule of thirds. You have your subject smack dab in the middle for a lot of the photos. You should check out "learning to see creatively" by Brian Peterson.

Watch your horizons. They're often crooked (the beach, and cross, for example)

The B&W photos lack contrast. Too flat. Don't just change the image to grayscale--that's not the best way to convert to b&w. And while we're on the subject, learn when to and not to use it. For example, in your "paradise city" shot, I don't know why you chose to convert that to b&w. Most of the time the point of a nighttime shot like that is to showcase the colors of the city.

Watch your backgrounds when taking portraits. Open your aperture wider so that the background is blurred. In your shots the background is too busy and distracts the eye away from your subject.

Focus--make sure your subject is in focus. Some of the shots look soft.

Criticism is not always pleasant to hear, but that's the only way to improve. Good luck!

I hate when people give answers based on the whether the pictures are pretty or not. Anyone can take a pretty photo and have it be a horrible photo. Which is what yours are.

Compositionally, there is nothing there. The lighting is horrible. There are no defined leading lines to draw your eye to a main focal point. There is nothing unique about them. The posing on the people is unflattering. Your images need color balanced. The black and whites are bland. The sepia is uneccessary (sp?) and therfor doesn't enhance the photo at all.

I'm sorry, but in all honesty, your pictures are just what you said - photos of someone who just picked up a camera and knows nothing about photography.

I think they are very nice. However, I am not trying to be rude, there is nothing characteristic or individual about them. They are pretty picture, they look like a lot of postcards or cards that I have seen. But there is nothing truly individual or unique about them which will make you remember them and set them apart.

your awesome with landscapes...the composition is really interesting. you frame the landscape so that interesting patterns emerge. i mean that, if i were to trace the objects in the pic, i'd come up with an interesting abstract pattern. your portraits are framed well, too. try to not be so shy; make sure you make intimate eye contact with the subject...this is hard to do. don't be afraid of scarying your subject and making them feel shy. Make them look at you, and tell your audience something about who they are.

good luck with your photos. i love art. art is hard work.
