My niece is 17 months old and still breastfeeding, she would not eat anything but breast milk when her mom is there, but when the mom goes to work she would eat regular baby food with her dad. Any advise on how to make her eat and make stop breadfeeding?

The breastfeeding relationship is unique to each mother/baby couple. If baby is refusing other foods as long as mom is around, them mom needs to be less available to baby, and baby will eat more solid food. Try offering table foods, cut into tiny pieces, instead of baby food. The variations in texture and flavor may be more appealing and interesting and she may begin to prefer it over boring old breast milk.

The transition must be gradual - eliminate one feeding at a time, and replace it with healthy food and loving attention.

Mom needs to be assured thast nothing is wrong with either her or the baby - it is perfectly natural to BF till two years (some people continue even longer, but that is their choice). It is also normal for one side of the BF relationship to want to end it before the other one is ready. Just take it one step at a time and everything will be fine.

I agree; it doesn't sound like anything's wrong with your niece (she is, after all, eating other foods), and it's not like she's 7 years old. In Europe, it's recommended to breastfeed a kid till (s)he's two. I've read that the American Academy of Pediatrics only officially recommends breastfeeding till age one, but I don't think any major health organizations are claiming that breastfeeding has no benefits for kids between the ages of one and two.
Perhaps the mom should cut back a little, but your niece probably misses the milk when she can't have it. It's a good chance for the two to bond while the mom isn't at work.

I would advise the mother to decide when she and your neice are ready to stop bf. If I had a choice I would still bf today. If mom and baby are ready to quit I would suggest for her to gradually ween her off. Start by removing one session per day and substituting with sippy cup of milk. She should do this for about 3-5 days and then remove another session in the same manner. Also remember at her age she should really only be drinking milk 2x per day.

My son is 20 months old and I still breastfeed. There is no magic age to stop. It is still good for the baby. I plan on stopping when he turns 2. My son is very underweight for his height/age so any nutrition I can give him is good. If the mom still wants to do it than let her.

well since the child will eat regular foods. the mom just needs to stop letting her breastfeed, she will get hungry enough that she will eat food, she will not starve her self. but if her mom really wants to stop she will find a way.

I know it's hard to break your children from these things, because we want to give them what they want.
I agree with you it is time to stop but on the real when her mom is ready to stop this she will.
good luck talking to your sister!!!
