It is because of the egg in the ingrediants.

Why would it be called a pie? You don't bake it in a pie shell, you don't even use a pie plate! You use a spring form pan. Nothing even remotely close to pie plate.

it mainly has to do with the pan and its height. cheese cakes are made in cake pans and are also usually over 2 1/2 inches qualifying them as "cake" Under 2 1/2 they would be a cheese-torte.

It's not really a pie.

It has more characteristics of a cake than a pie.
