It is so easy to bore people. The Bible doesn't have to be that way. It is up to preachers, teachers to make it understandable and relevant. And very important to meet peoples' needs. Also, it is easy just to "tickle their ears", the Bible says. In other words to deal with issues that are all fluff, interesting but, not really doctrinal. Or, to make the people the focal point instead of God the main emphasis. He is Lord! So, what do you suggest. It's not fair or right to bore people nor just to entertain, but to really instruct them on what God says in His Word. Help! I have been doing this for 25 years and still have trouble with this issue.

You are correct, it is easy to give people what they want and accept their praise. It is harder to give them what they need and make them feel like it is what they wanted all along. Most people and churches are on a journey of sorts. Take them with you and express the truth with conviction. Let them see you as a person who struggles and fights to maintain your own way (actually His way). Let the people see a genuine Christian experience lived out before them. How could you do them a greater service than that? Take time away for yourself (like Jesus), because you need it. Find the vision that God has for you and your people.

The Pastor at my family's church preaches straight from the bible and he cross-references with bible verses that pertain to the portion of the bible he is preaching on. I understand what you mean. Many churches today are 'entertainment centers' anymore, more worried about having bands play, testimonials, etc. instead of focusing on the preaching of the word of God. Our church is no such place. Our church's primary focus IS the word of God. Churches that 'tickle their ears' merely twist the meaning of the bible into that which pleases them - not what the real meaning of the scripture is. The truth is is that many churches today have gone apostate, having abandoned the truth of Almighty God; deviated away from the gospel. It's sad and I understand what you're talking about. Our church has a website with sermons that you can listen to on the site. See the link below. Thanks for sharing your dilemma. I'm sure you're not the only Christian in this situation. May God bless you.

Well I truly believe (though you may see this too as boring or irrelevent to your trouble) that if you have been called to preach and teach the people of God, that by your sermon (which should be by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit) God will instruct the people in his own way.... your only concern is your relationship with God and the rest, such as your sermon, shall be in his will.
I will pray for you O' man of God. God will do his Will in you.

Well, from expierence, draw from experience.

One priest I knew, Father D (very cool guy) used to tell us stories of his days in the Marines and how it related to the gospel reading that day. 10 to 1 says his new parish he's been transfered to is getting to hear about his recent stay in Iraq.

Another one, Father M. had a few good sermons when he talked about the lives of saints. Though, normally his train of thought not only doesn't have a caboose, but it jumped the rails and crashed after leaving the station.

Everyone loved Deacon S.'s sermon about his new lease on life after he was released from the hospital after before Christmas.

Expository teaching. Verse by verse. Start at John 1:1 and do a chapter a week.
You will then after about 5 years be able to say that you taught the "whole word of GOD" Also your paperwork is reduced to an outline and the Bible itself.

use visual aids.
those have always helped me pay attention better.
[especially with children.]
tell stories from your own life, as well.
that helps me to relate to the message in the talk or sermon and helps me apply it to myself and my life.
hope this helped some!!
