Being intelligent not only means being book-smart(like having a high IQ, or a high GPA) but it also means people smarts (some may call it EQ or the Emotional Quotient).
Remember you live in a society that is critical, and people not only judge you by what you wear, but also what you say and how you act. Being called uneducated, is a judgement most definitely. Most people dont may not see your 4.0, but may hear your vulgar language.
Decorum is about proper place and proper time. Not unless you would want to live on an island, you have to try to get along with other people, and that includes proper communication.
Just to illustrate, would you wear a bathing suit to a job interview(except for a lifeguard position)? Im hoping you see the reasons why this is not only silly but also a bad exercise in manners. You will be judged on what people see, and they won't take the time to know you have a great GPA. Same goes for language.
People are critical and emotional. Swearing doesnt mean you are uneducated, but dont expect people to see past the bad language and not judge you by what you say.

There are people who think that using profanity as part of regular speech patterns (in other words, "swearing a lot") means that a person doesn't know the words to really express what they are trying to say. For example, when you say "that's f**ked up," are you saying that something is unfair, unjust, inappropriate or simply a great big mess?
I'm not completely against swearing myself, but I have learned in the last 10 years that there is a time and a place for it. In some contexts, I can swear like a sailor and no one blinks an eye; in others, people will judge me as being "uneducated," crude, or just lazy.

When you swear it makes you look "uneducated". It's not necessarily true that you are. The intelligent person will find a more productive way to express that dislike for something. I just hate seeing the "F" word bantered around, especially in front of young children.
And as for you...you hit the nail on the head when you said it was second nature for you to swear. You don't even think about what you're saying. Next time you feel an expletive about to occur, take a deep breath and ask yourself what to you hope to accomplish by saying it.

I certainly know a lot of professors who swear!
But when people speak formal academic language, they do not curse. You will hardly ever hear a professor swear while giving a lecture, or the president of the United States giving a speech, for example. While some educated people swear, they don't do it when they are trying to sound educated.
Also, people believe that swear words are just words that people fill in when they don't know other words. The number of words you know certainly is connected with your education.

It is often assumed that the crude and uneducated will be
forced to use slang and slurs rather then express themselves
in a way that denotes intelligence.
Within the upper circles of society in the old days (which I do
not claim to belong) a working man that never attended college
is more likely curse and swear then someone of noble
breeding.

Generally, a person with a moderate or advanced education doesn't have to pepper their conversation the same old tired four letter words in order to get their point across. Swearing is usually left to those who have nothing else to say, so insert the words to make it appear their saying something of importance, when it reality, it don't mean sh*t.

Why can't you articulate these so called words without swearing then? You say you are intelligent, yet you spelt that word wrong. There is a proper place and time for cussing. If you are cussing around at a place and at a time that is inappropriate, then it's only natural to assume you are uneducated and uncivilized.

Actually it is true for some people. A person can express themselves a lot better using proper vocabulary than vulgarity. You can insult someone much better using big words that they don't understand with their limited vocabulary vs. profanity. Try it! I've pissed off more than a couple people by speaking in a sophisticated manner vs. their profane rantings! hehe

Because swearing is perceived as boorish or crude...I guess that most people think that a smart person would know better than to act in a such a classless way...

Because people with decent manners and vocabulary can come up with better of expressing themselves, without resorting to profanities.
Ever read some 17th century insults? They are viciously cutting and don't resort to pedestrian bodily functions sexual positions.
Face it, when you are crude you come across as ignorant, uncivilized, and uneducated. There's only one way to change this.
