I've noticed the prices for a flight now are cheaper than in June. I am not sure if it is because it is June or if prices come down the closer it gets to the flight.

Typically a flights prices will be the cheapest from 6 weeks to 3 weeks before the flight leaves. When you get inside of 3 weeks normally the prices will start going way up. And when you are to far out, typically the airlines have not set their really low competitive fares yet. So your best chance of getting a deal would be about 4 weeks before your flight.

As a former Travel Agent, The rule of thumb is the further in advance you purchase your ticket the lowest fared seats are available...

Explianation: There are different cost codes (by letter) such as F: First Class (Highest Fare), D: First Class (Discounted Fare using Miles accumulated), E: First Class (Lowest First class Seats with Advance Purchase and Availibility...)

Then comes COACH... Most Airlines have about 5 to 7 various letters for the same COACH seats - with different restrictions & penalties... C: would usually be FULL FARE day of flight ($649 + various taxes on ALL Tickets) H: $550, J: $475, K: $427, M: $389, on down to Q: $250 - With Q being available only on 30 seats with all the Advance Purchase & Cancelation/Change Penalities. M: might have 30 seats, K: 30 seats, J: 40 seats and H: the remaining seats....

If you want the lowest fare available be flexable on time of departure, Ex: 8AM might not have Q class available yet the 230PM might have M Class seats still available...

BE AWARE ALL AIRLINES ALWAYS "OVERBOOK" due to the % rate of no-shows, EX: an Executive might of had a meeting that had been cancelled so he does not fly... At one point in my Travel Jobs I was in Quality Control where we had to fix complicated ERRORS in PNR's for REVENUE from ARC...

With world wide Corporate Agencies I learned of that...

Good Luck

Airfares are lower now because Winter is low season (unless you're going to a ski resort or someplace warm). In order to make money the airlines cut fares.

However, with rare exceptions, airlines "penalize" last-minute travelers and charge more (as in a non-discounted fare).

It all comes down to what the market will bear.

On the other hand you can often find last-minute bargains through sites such as Hotwire or Priceline, but they come with very heavy restrictions.
