What makes them good. I am looking to get one in a month or too, Should i do alot of research on artists in my area and look at they work they have done. There is this place near me that is a pretty big and popular place to go... the guy there has been doing it for about 4 years.... Is it better to go to a big well known place that has commercials or a mom and pap store??

I don't like a lot of popular and highly advertised shops. They tend to just get business for having deals and while the work isn't bad, its still not worth what you are paying. Good artists are common, but its good to do some research to find out who is a good choice for you.

Things you need to look at are the cleanliness and safety of the shop, look at the work the artist does...are the lines nice, even in width and clear? Check the shading and coloring and grey scale and make sure it blends well and is even. When you go to a shop to look at those things you are basically just window shopping. Ask your questions, but keep it brief and to a point. If at any point you doubt the artist, find someone else before you commit to having the tattoo done. Good luck

I hope this is a troll question, because if it's not, you are really NOT the person to be having kids let alone parenting them, judging by this question. When I was 6, the thought of a tattoo never crossed my mind, however I did admire the beauty of them whenever I saw them on someone. When I first found out about the pain of a tattoo, that really scared me, to the point where whenever I saw someone with one, I thought they were a tough broad (this was when I was a child). Even as a 6 year old, I knew they were a permanent decision, though I found out about laser removal later down the road (and people say that hurts FAR worse than a tattoo). The kid is going to change her mind, have new interest as she ages (she may like ponies but chances are, it will be something else later on), and regret has no age limit. Remember that, plus can you imagine a 6 year old getting a tattoo?! Kids normally hate shots when they're at the doctor's office, imagine 4-5 needles jamming ink into your child's skin, 3,000 times a minute! Besides, I am currently getting a tattoo on my wrist next month for my 18th birthday and I wanted it since I was 14. My mother promised me she will never sign for me to get a tattoo and if I did, I will be old enough to sign for it on my own terms. What do you know?! I'm signing for it next month, my mom sure wasn't playing around!

First thing you should concern yourself with is whether or not the place is sanitary! Next ask to see their portfolio. Just because the place is big or can afford to advertise doesn't always mean they are great at what they do! There are alot of little tattoo shops that are just holes in the walls but can offer some of the most outstanding work! Also have what you want picked out and have the artist draw it up a few days before you decide to have the tattoo done. It's always better if you can ask some of the people that you'll be showing it off to, what they think about it before it's perminent.

YES you should do your research....#1 - learn a little about the safety procedures and what should be done in a tattoo studio safety wise and what shouldn't be done. Look at all the artists in your area, look at their websites...and look at their artwork (i.e. straight lines - if they're actually straight)...if you like their artwork, go to the studio to get a feel for it, look at their binder portfolio and see if you like the atmosphere and whether you want to get tattooed from them or not. Important: When in the studio...ask about safety, whether they always use new needles and tubing and if everything is autoclaved. Tell them your tattoo idea or show them if it's exact thing and get a price range. Remember that good tattoos are not cheap and cheap tattoos are not good. There's tattoo studios in your area that have tv commercials??? I would go to both the umm commercial? ones and the smaller stores to look. Just because they can afford a commercial, doesn't mean they're great...

My tattoo artist is known around the world but his shop is pretty small and it's next to an auto place and a Korean resturant...bigger place doesn't mean better...

4 years is OK & if you like his work & the shop is clean then you are alright

Personally I wouldn't go to anyone with less than 10 years experience in the business. I have 6 tattoos & I'm happy with them because not only did I research the piece that I wanted but I researched my artist who I have stuck with for several years. I looked at his work, checked out his shop & talked to customer's that would be in the shop when I was looking through his books of art

You can ask questions like... Do you like his work? DO you trust him? have you had work done by him or her before?

RESEARCH IS THE KEY TO ALL SMART DECISIONS

& this one will stay with you forever so put the time & energy in to it that it deserves!

Good Luck! ;-)

BTW they are sooo addicting! lol oh & please don't get anything tribal unless you are part of a tribe!!! Arm bands are rediculous & kanji only works if you are japanese!

Definitely no questions asked, CHECK THEIR WORK. I went to one last year and get something done that I paid $100 for and once it healed, wished that I hadn't gone their. I went to one that was local to get it fixed and they charged me the same price that they would have if they started from scratch, and they even included color, where the other was only black and white. The first one was one that I went to before but different guys and the first guy had done a good job. The second guy had about 17 years experience and I think that I could have done a much better job on myself. Only check THEIR PERSONAL WORK. Not the work of everyone else in the parlor.

don't go to a place just because it is popular. often times places are only popular because they have good prices or have good advertising. you should judge the artist only by the art that they have created. do you have any pictures of tattoos that your prospective artist has done? my tattoo artist is very well known all over the state but he didn't work in a shop that was highly publicised.

It is important to see the work on people not just in books and ask them for references. Also find out if they use an autoclave to sterilize their equipment, how clean is the shop? Ask yourself these questions because they are very important. For every clean and well run shop, there are at least 2 that aren't. Don't catch something like hepatitis, do your research.

My artist has 35+ Years experience! I would check out a few artists. Check their book and more than 30 samples. Have them sketch what you want. Watch them tattoo someone else. Is their hand steady? Lines straight and unbroken? That kind of thing.

Check out their shop - make sure it is clean and that they use sterilized needles!! The last thing you want is to get Hep C! I have been to both big and small shops- I found that the small took their time and didn't rush! They're in it for the beauty not just the money
