About all I can say on this subject is, it sorrows me when I think of all the families that live in America, living in poverty or unable to afford health insurance...when the prisoners in our penitentiary's are getting all their needs taken care of and WE (and the poor) are paying for it! Something is VERY wrong with this picture. :)

Excuse me, people, but when you have a base that's processing soldiers on their way to and from a combat area, even though the troops are rotating constantly, that doesn't mean the base is necessarily moving, so "permanent" billeting would be more appropriate than a tent. If you're going to be jammed into a room with a dozen other people for no less than a month, at least give the room real walls so everyone can stand up straight.

Realize, however, that when soldiers are put into tents in situations like that, it's because they either haven't had time to build barracks, or because there are barracks but not enough room for everyone. Any other time, it is a mobility issue. In the field, no, they shouldn't expect a solid roof. In a temporary encampment, tents are the only feasible option there as well.

But I know what you mean by most prisons being a little too cozy for the people they house. Some rights activists actually have fits because they electrify the razor wire surrounding prisons that hold people who rape and murder children in mass sprees of violence. If we're going to pay our taxes so criminals can have cable and exercise equipment, let's make them work for it. Think of all the money we'd save if we had the prisoners do more of the otherwise tax-funded manual labor in our country.

our prisons are pretty overcrowded and they aren't very nice places to be. New York's rent is expensive because there is a very high demand for housing and the supply can never really meet it at a point where rent would be reasonable...thats why a lot of people who work in the city commute from outside NYC. And our military live on bases, not in tents. If you mean during tours of duty its because they have to be mobile. If youre fighting in a war you cant just stay in one place and set up facilities that people can easily find and destroy.

Being a soldier and answering this one isnt all that hard. Soldiers volunteer to protect all people who choose to have our nations flag represent them. Our missions dictate how we move and what shelter is available to our needs.

As for the prisioners, they need to indure hardships. Our justice systems have shown to cater that prisioners have rights as most americans. I believe this to be wrong, why?

On 9/11 not one person went to work and decided to die that day in the World Trade Center or in a plane crash. But prisioneers do decide and begin to walk the fate they decide. These people should do community services and be shown to the public, wear different clothing and seen by everyone and be made to face ridicule for the stupid decision they choose to create. Prisioners deserve nothing and should be made to provide back to the community.

A Soldier does what he/she made a commiment to. We believe that America will back our decision to protect her. We sacrifice our families, or jobs and certian freedoms so all americans will enjoy the blanket of freedom that makes us all free.

So why cant prisioners be used in war time? Simple. Prisioners cant be trusted and might sell secrets or become double agents.

I agree jenny. It looks like we're gonna be over there for a long time so we may as well build a resort for the troops. Lets face it, if the Bushes or the Kennedy's Or the Rices, or the Chaney's were there, we would have already built a resort, with cocktails and party's every weekend.

Except for in combat zones, where is the military forced to be in tents. Myself, in over 20 years of military service only slept in a tent whenin the field.

Part of being in the military is learning how to "rough it", as hiding from the enemy would be rather difficult if you're living in a high-dollar bungalow.

Don't worry. I'm sure that the men and women in our armed forces know what they're getting into. If you're so concerned, though, why don't you join the military and suggest it to an officer? I'm sure that they'll get a great laugh out of it.

why do you think it is inapropriate for soldiers to live in tents in the field? but anyway living in the field in tents is done for one main reason. you move alot out in the field so it is the most practical way to get shelter in the field.

They live in tents when their out on the fields. What'' Do you expect them to build cabins and buildings when its unlikely they will be in the one spot for more than a couple of days ?

because those are permanent establishments. build a base like that in iraq and you're just asking for it to be blown away. units have to have mobility, what are you gonna build a new ******* building everytime they relocate? also, prisions try to rehab people and teach them skills, there is no rehabing some of these mindless drones we call soldiers.
