Why not? A smile goes a long way and could just make a stranger's day better! ;)

There is nothing wrong with a smile. It doesn't mean this stranger wants a relationship or even sex. Just that you 2 made eye contact and it's rude sometimes not to acknowledge this.
Nodding is a nice way to say hi without speaking or smiling.

Only if its a friendly smile and not like a "i want you" type of smile, then its OK to smile back. It also depends on they type of situation your in like if your walking 1 direction and he or she is walking the other direction and you happen to cross paths then ya sure smile. If your sitting down doing your own thing like eating or talking to your friends and you look around and just notice this stranger just smiling at you like that, I wouldn't smile back lol, because that's just kinda freaky. Its all on the situations and your surrounding and stuff. But in general, usually it happens when your walking down the street and your making eye contact so for that one I would have to say yes, smile its only common polite courtesy!

Best of wishes, Keisha

Well smiling is just being friendly but make sure it goes no further since they are a stranger and you don't know them. But smiling sometimes makes a person's day!

I do. I live in the South, and it is Southern culture to smile and say, "hey" to strangers. We do it all the time. Other circumstances might prevent me from doing so, however.

Yes, absolutely - unless you think the smile is a lascivious leer. I think most people want to be friendly. It should be rewarded and encouraged with a smile or a nod.

If someone smile at you and you smile back, then you are sending the same signal he sent.

Depends on what kind of smile it is....
If it's a "Hi there, how are you?" smile then of course. If it's a "Damn, you look fiiine!" smile then it depends on whether you're attracted to them, however, if it's a "What you wearing under THAT little girl?" smile, RUN!!
