no not at all, maybe if more kid were spanked instead of just grounded, then our society would have less problems

I guess that would depend on how the government defines spanking. Obviously, abuse is against the law already. I don't thing the government will be able to make parents use other more effective ways of discipling. Most people realize that spanking a child isn't an effective way to change behavior, but they simply don't know what to do. The gov wants parents to not abuse and not to use spanking as a form of punishment - I think they're right, but I don't see parents being forced into good parenting practices. Spanking isn't going to be illegal, but maybe this debate will educate parents about what they should be doing.

My parents didn't spank me much, but what I remember of it is the humiliation, not the lesson. I also remember feeling that I was right and that it was unfair.
Teachers used to spank kids in my classes on birthdays--one time for every year, plus "a pinch to grow an inch." I was so horrified by that that my mom wrote me excuse notes so the teachers wouldn't do it to me.
I guess I can't say definitively that I think spanking is ALWAYS wrong, but I would not be troubled if my state forbade it. There have to be better ways to get points across. . .

NO! It makes me angry that they would even consider making that illegal! Some people who drink become alcoholics, does that mean that NONE of us can have ANY alcohol? I am a licensed foster parent as well as a proud parent of 3. I am aware of some peoples inability to differentiate between child abuse and discipline, but I am perfectly capable of doing so. I can't teach my 2 year old why it is wrong to run into the street because I can't show her how you could get hit by a car...that's too dangerous. I can, however teach her that she will get a swift smack on her rear if she runs into the street until she's old enough to understand the danger in running into the street. I rarely spank my children, but there are times when an immediate result is necessary until my children are old enough to understand that the world is not always a safe place.

Yes, our system does. I don't think it should, but it does. Most people have answered "no". I don't believe our system should either, but if we continue to elect Republicans and Democrats (who are both slowly eroding our freedoms), then we can expect more of the same. At the same time, if you really believe in freedom, then you must take the good with the bad. Should there be a seat belt law? A motorcycle helmet law? Regulation of telephone companies? Minimum wage? etc. Personally, I could do with a LOT less government interference.

No they really shouldn't, but they do. In most states if you spank a child its a form of child abuse and DFS gets involved. If it is within reason I don't have a problem with spanking here and there, but then everyone has their own opinion of right and wrong and how much is too much.

No I don't. Like everyone seems to agree I think it should be done at the right time. Certain things that small children do like telling their parents no or cursing or hitting is not something that you can negotiate with a toddler. They need to know immediatly that it is unacceptable. I was spanked when I was younger. i lived no permanent damage and quite frankly"if it ain't broke, don't fix it" look at society today. Unruly because there is insuffficient consequences for actions. I do not belive in beating children but I refuse to allow my three year old to think that disrespect is alright.

I don't think they have the right to tell parents not to spank, but they have the right to try to help protect kids from serious abuse. I don't consider spanking abuse, it is a discipline method, sometimes effective, sometimes not. In my state spanking is okay if not taken overboard.

sticky subject.... my philosophy is that the fear of being spanked scares more the child then going over board on a spanking. the system should only get involved when it's abuse, and i think there is a big difference b/w discipline and abuse.

The question is not weather spanking is right or wrong but if it's OK for the government to tell us how we should raise our children. The answer is NO!

To appropriately spank, no. But there is a definite line between spanking and child abuse. Spanking is for direct disobience, not just a way to say "no" to your kid. It's also not for a young child esp under 2!
