If your dog is a specific breed, or obvious mix of one, you can contact a breed specific rescue to see if they can list the dog to help you find a good home.

You need to find an apartment that *will* take dogs. There are such places EVERYWHERE, you just need to put in a bit of extra work to find them. When you purchase or adopt a dog, it is a lifetime commitment; it isn't right to give them away, simply because it's slightly inconvenient for you to find an apartment that will take dogs. You may also need to pay a pet deposit; however, that's the price of pet ownership and of being a responsible adult.
In my adult life, I have always had dogs (large dogs). Before moving to my current house, I went through four different apartment moves in three different cities. Yep, it was often a bit more work to find a place that would accept dogs, and sometimes I moved to places that weren't on my list of "dream apartments", but there were ALWAYS some decent, safe and very livable options where they let me have my dogs. I honestly don't believe that there is any city or town in the entire country where you truly have *no* options but to give your dog away, simply because you can't find housing that accepts dogs (with the exception of people who are in extreme situations -- i.e., people who need to move into a homeless shelter, emergency care, military barracks or nursing homes...). Most of the time, it's just an easy excuse people use to dump pets. Try calling your local humane society or nearest shelter; they often keep lists of pet friendly landlords -- or they may know where you can look.
If you *do* end up giving your pet away, please talk to a local humane society, rescue group or shelter (someone else mentioned petfinder.com -- they may also be a good option), and please don't *ever* get another pet.
Good luck!

Getting a dog is a life time commitment, not just until the animal becomes an inconvenience (i.e. finding an apartment that accepts dogs, paying higher deposits). All this dog is going to know is that it had a loving home then got dumped somewhere when it did not do anything wrong. Your dog did nothing to deserve this, find an apartment and it with you.

Well i have a 50 lb mix border collie that has gone threw 3 moves for me alll in apartments. It is more of a hassle to find apartment landlords that will accept pets but it is not that difficult. So im guessing youve completely exhusted this avenue. Since this is the case take him to a non kill shelter. If you are near westren PA there is one in Pittsburgh called "animal friends" .. you may have one in your state as well. Do not take him to the SPCA

i would try and find a friend that would take your dog, or find an apartment that will allow dogs, but if you must you may have to take the dog to the humane society

If it's pure breed find on the internet a local rescue for that specific breed. If it's not, and it's well trained, you should be able to find someone to adopt it. Possibly an older couple looking for companionship.

If you need to take him to a shelter, be sure it is a 'no-kill' shelter, and call them first.
Petfinder.com is also a good resource - you can find rescue groups near you who may be able to help.

I would strongly suggest a no-kill shelter like the SPCA or humane society in your area.
