This year I have decided to join a branch of the military. I am stuck between the Air Force and the Coast Guard. I have tried contacting a Coast Guard recruiter twice and I haven't had any response, I heard its because they dont really need more people in the Coast Guard. Anyways I was thinking about port security, investigator or gunners mate for the Coast Guard, does anyone have any info on any of these careers? For the Air Force im thinking fire protection apprentice, anyone have any info on this career and on how likely you are to deploy to the middle east? I have a high school diploma and I want to go to school while in the service. Any info would be appreciated! Thanks!

I'd go CG, but I'm partial cause I'm in the CG. Port security is awesome. I wish I could participate in that more. We do boardings off shore, we also do some in shore for safety regulations. Investigation jobs and gunners mate are also great jobs. You need to go to a CG recruiters officer, none if this calling them. We always need people!!!

The middle east isn't really an option for us. Unless you request it. Getting an education while in the service is an awesome idea, I wish I had joined before going to college. I probably wouldn't owe so much money.

I'm ex USAF so I am biased for Air Force but as a suggestion going beyond that; Do some research into the civilian equivalent of the skills you will learn in each. You may wish to make a career out of the military but don't make your decision as if you were. Evaluate both as if they were college training courses for a civilian job (consider pay and availabilty of jobs and job promotion within the field). Then if, or when you decide to get out, you will already know you have made the best choice. Good luck. Edit: One other thing, in the Air Force you will have the opportunity to travel the world. The CG has a more limited field of operation.

I was in the Navy for 20 years and have been trained in all forms of firefighting. All the way up to Advanced Aviation Fire Fighter. You could get a lot of experience and training in many other professions in the Navy and see the world at the same time. I've also been around the world 11 times. How many people do you know whom can say that?

How about gunners mate for the Navy I was one. you get to use all weapons from 9mm up to 5" 54 cal find that beast in the coast guard. you might even get to operate a PBR on the rivers of Iraq though that one is volunteer only. My favorite guns were the .50 cals and the 25mm cannon.
