First please know that friendship with God is possible. Friendship is started by introduction, strengthened by conversation and association. I don't know if you are a Bible believer. If you are than you can start by knowing God's name (found in th KJ at Psalms 83:18) . Prayer is our humbly talking to God. In it we can ask for guidance in getting to know him better. You can even ask to find people who will be genuinely interested in helping you in your search. Reading the Bible is His conversation back to us. (2 Timothy 3:16, 17) In it we learn his likes dislikes and the requirements for friendship with him. (Psalm 97:10.) This is just a start, but I hope it is helpful.

The best way to get closer to God is to start reading His word (the Bible). Don't try and read huge chunks at a time...Just read a small bit and try to understand what you read before moving on to the next chapter or verses. Listen to a good christian radio station (klove.com gives a list of all their stations), Get into a good Bible based church and get into fellowship with other Christians that can help you and give you advise when you need it.
When I'm in the car I sing with the songs on the radio and I use that time to pray and talk to God. I do Bible Reading and Bible study during lunch and other free times that I have.
As you get closer to Him, you'll learn to recognise His voice when He speaks to you. (sometimes through thoughts, sometimes through a song, sometimes through what you read and sometimes through the voice of a friend or pastor) And when the Lord tells you something, He's not the author of confusion, He will confirm it. Wait for confirmation before running off to do something you've heard or read. And He will give you His peace (Philippians 4:4 - 19) Hope this helps. I'll be praying for you. If you need someone to talk to feel free to e-mail me: janpatton2005@yahoo.com

Never, ever give up!!!
I read my Bible daily, pray without ceasing, praise (www.klove.com) and worship him.
To drawer nearer to the living God through Jesus Christ means we must spend time with him.
If you are not sure where to start your study...read the book of John. Then read it again.
Then, read the book of Jude (book before Revelation) and then read each book back to Matthew. I know it seems an odd way to read the Bible...but it will be a blessing.
The best translation? That would be the one that is easy for you to read and understand. My favorite is the New Century Version (translation.) Other good ones...
1) NLT (New Living Translation)
2) NKJ (New King James)
3) NIV (New International Version)
4) Amplified
As long as it's taken from the original manuscripts, it's a good translation :o)

Definetly go on a religious or spiritual retreat if you have a chance. Retreats have brought me closer to God than anything else I have done, and they changed the way I worship and percieve the Holy Spirit.
Other things you can do: pray, meditate, read the Bible or whatever holy text your religion has, and talk to a priest, minister, rabbi, iman, or other clergy member. Get involved in activities sponsored by your church, synagogue, mosque, or temple.

I would say that those are all good answers... but I am under the impression that we don't live for ourselves, we live for HIM, and we act as extensions of HIM, and we are to go out and help those in need and work through HIM. Make your life (which belongs to HIM) have meaning, volunteer somewhere, I garauntee it will make you feel like your life has more meaning, and at the end of the day, you will have a smile on your face knowing that you have helped someone selflessly! Oh yeah, and Read "Purpose Driven Life"

I pray and read my Bible daily. I associate regularly with others who put God's will first in their lives. I fill my mind and heart with righteous things and turn away quickly from things I know that God would not approve of. I teach others about God and the Bible and I try to immitate Jesus in the way I treat everyone. If you do all these things, will will not have time to do anything which goes against God's will.

First you just have to make sure your in a church where God wants you to be, you need to have a body of believers you can count on to help you through.
God has been making Himself more known to me lately than ever before! Its awesome! Like in my worship service He speaks to me, during the sermon He speaks to me, the other night He woke me up in the middle of the night just to tell me something that was in my heart that wasn't right! WOW!! He is an awesome God! Just praise him! Give Him all the glory and honor!

if one wished to become closer to god, they would get to know god better, by studying god's word. as found in the bible. if one calls on god to come into their heart he will do it, but only if asked. the feeling u are now having is your conscious, telling u that u need to make some changes, if we feel we are not doing right, it is our conscious, which i believe is god trying to help us become closer to him. when we sin we do get these feelings that something is wrong.

The idea of a God is a man made one!
People have conditioned this idea of a God into our collective mind. When a person feels as if their life is not going how they want generally they look to a God to try and provide some sort of guidance.
The problem is there is no God that has ever done anything for anyone! The only way your life will change is for you to change what you are doing!
Look at the results you are getting from your present actions. Then change your actions to change the results that come! This is the only way to improve your life!
A God can not do it!
SINCE NO GOD ACTUALLY EXISTS!!!

I think you must develop a relationship with him if you want to
get closer to Him. This involves prayer. To have a relationship
with anyone we must talk to that someone, it is the same
with god. In as much as you must pray to him, you have also
to listen. When you pray go somewhere quiet, be sincere,
honest, and loving. Know that he loves you very much.
