The cabinets are cherry with a walnut stain; they are in good condition & I like the style. The kitchen light is low due to a nothern exposure. I want to go lighter (maybe a white base with a brown wash) to help lighten the room & update the kitchen.

Also the cabinets have alot of wear & tear on them since they are about 25 years old.

You do not specify how many cabinets we are talking about so I am going to assume cabinets for a medium size kitchen. Let's include prep:
(removing doors, removing hinges and hardware, sanding or deglossing both sides of the doors , cabinet sides, drawer fronts and styles). Next comes priming and then topcoat. Finally rehanging doors and putting hardware back on. Their is drying time involved here so this will be a process of a few days. I think with labor and materials you can expect low range estimates in the $500.00 to $550.00 range. You may want to consider purchasing new hinges, handles and pulls while you're at it. I hope this helps.

if they really are cherry wood, like you say, you should be shot for wanting to paint them. sand them down, maybe bleach them some to remove what stain you couldnt sand off, then use clear.

frankly, i dont think they really are cherry wood, i have never heard of it being used for cabinets. are they solid wood? or just veneers? there are other ways to go besides paint. contact paper works nice if you are careful about it. Why don't you instal skylights or something instead? seems to me you are going about lightening the room the wrong way. instal better lighting fixtures. why ruin beautiful cabinets? anyone that paints nice wood doesnt know squat, and should be eliminated from the gene pool. jeesh that just makes me mad.

I have to agree with the first answer.....well maybe not about you being shot. It makes me sad to see nice wood painted. I would think a lighter color on the wall, or floor covering would do more to lighten up the room. That being said, paint isn't costly, one gallon is going to cover up a lot of nice wood.
