Birds survive after the death of their mate. They do go through a period of mourning, but it doesn't kill them or make them ill. Since you don't know what killed your female,(infection, illness) your male COULD get sick as well. I would take him to a certified avian veterinarian for a check up just to be sure there is no risk.
For the other answerer, lovebirds do NOT die without their mate.

Get the male to the vet and the female also to get a necropsy. If it was something contageous, in the food, or airborne, you'll want to make sure the male doesn't catch it too.
The male will be fine, just give him lots of love and attention. The story of lovebirds not surviving without a mate is untrue. All birds can bond with any other bird, and if one dies, the other will go through a mourning period where they just seem sad - because they are. They typically wouldn't die from it. I would wait if you plan on getting him another buddy because he may reject a new bird anyway.

You can put a mirror in there so he can see himself and he will be OK. He will think that is another bird. Then later if you want to you can buy another one for him. When you do that be sure you change the toys up in the cage, take the mirror out and introduce them together outside the cage then if they get along put them in the cage together and watch them for about 20 minutes. (The change around of it toys is because it won't think it is it's own cage. Birds are protective of their cage when a new bird is put in it with them. So change things up that way he/she won't think it is their original nest)

If you see that the male is sad, you might want to get him another pair. This is what I did to my parakeets when one of the pair died. We got another one and so far it has been pretty good!

cockatiels can survive alone. i had a male cockatiel for 4 years by himself. he eventually died of old age.
i know with a lot of birds, a mirror can give them company. they do not know the reflection is them. they think its another bird.
