"Sentient" means capable of rational thought, which does not seem to be the case for plants. If it was, there'd be plant countries, a plant culture, etc!

However, this does not imply that plants are not alive, or even slightly more than that. Research suggests that some plants can "feel" pain (e.g. tomatoes). There is also a thing called thigmotropism--plants reacting to stimuli, bending when they touch obstacles, stuff like that. In short, plants probably do have a more complex experience of the world than most of us credit them for, but sentience is still taking a bit too far.

Plants do not have a central nervous system, and the individual cells do not communicate electrochemically with their neighbors.
The Mythbusters did an experiment when they hooked up a plant to a polygraph and then "tortured" it or threatened to torture it. Once the variants such as draft, temperature variations and so on were eliminated, the result was no reaction at all.
Plants being sentient? Busted.

Yes they are.

They react to the environment all the time...just look at how flowers open up and follow the sun.

There are other examples that demonstrate this too....look at the Venus Fly Trap how it feels the fly and clamps down on it.

I know a medicinal plant in Jamaica they call 'Shame me lady'...its leaves close up when you touch it.

Having a nervous system like people do is but one way that beings feel the environment...plants show another...they definately react to changes.

NO! They have no nervous system; they can't feel or sense anything. This is the generally accepted view.
