That depends on the usage. If you do not need advanced features, or the latest updated program, you can redily use Office 97 or Office 2000 both of which can be found at very reasonable prices.

If you plan on using Word for documents that require exact standards, such as precise placement of characters, embedded graphics, etc, you should use the most recent version that is available in stores.

You may want to look at OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org/) it is free and compatible with MS Word.

Office 2003 version is a good start.

Office 2007 is going to cost $600 and upwards and because it's new id be waiting for a service pack to get a lot of the holes ironed out as most of us know Microsoft like to bring out new things and not fix them quickly enough.

Office 2003 is a good version of Microsoft Office.

Office 2003 SP2 - I had some contractors using the 2007 version and when they sent the files to me they were a mess. Even the font was completely different and had originally just been Arial.

2003 is more widely used right now while they iron out the issues with 07.

Office 2007

More features currently supported and this way you won't have to worry about buying Office 2007 in 2 years. Microsoft may drop support on Office 2003 once the ball gets rolling on 2007

You can only get a free trial of MS Office within 1 month while you still have to pay licensed fee after that... But there's a free substitute which features nearly all functions available in MS Office and supports the files published by it, too. Just search for "Open Office" in Google and you will get it.

2 choices:
Wait and see what will Word 2007 users say about it in the future, because it is newcomer.
Buy a Word 2003, it is compatible with most of todays software.

if u r a beginner then it's better to get 2007 version coz u need not browse deep for inserting images and similar stuff .if u r quite familiar with this kinda stuff and capable of finding how to do ur work by searching for the functions then any word processor will do be it MS 2003/2007.but the functionality has'nt changed much

Save some money and dont support microsofts strong arm tactics. Try open office at www.openoffice.org .
I have used openoffice writer in place of word many times.
