i have worked in the field of child development for the last 15 years and have potty trained well over 30 children both boys and girls. the first question i have to ask is how old is your son? the average age for most boys to be potty trained is between 3 and 4 years of age that is not to say that some two year old boys are not potty trained but in my years of experiences the "norm" is around 3 and 4 and the many reason is the limited vocabulary it will make it extremely difficult to know when he has to go with out him being able to tell you he needs to go potty most 2 year olds who are potty trained talk extremely well and communicate easily. now some people will tell you put him on the potty every 30 minutes and he will go and get the hang of it and to a degree this may be true but i have also known children who's parents are the ones who are trained to sit them on the potty every 30 minutes and if they don't a accident will happen for sure because the child is not ready and they will do this for a year then their son hits 3 and 1/2 and now they "finally" get it...no it was now time for them to get it and if they would have been patient and waited till 3 or after it might have been quick and easy! so as much as finally getting rid of diapers sounds so wonderful if you want this to be a positive experiences for you both then consider your sons age and know that some boys don't really get it till close to 4 and that he is normal and moving along at a natural pace and give him the time to have his vocabulary grow so that he is not frustrated by not being able to tell you and you don't get frustrated wondering why it is taking him so long! good luck!

Can I ask how is his vocabulary limited?
If its because his language has not fully developed?
If its do to a language problem? If that's the case then start him up with speech therapy.
Teach him the universal sign language for bathroom . This can work until he is able to say all words or say the word potty.

the best way to start is take him once an hour and sit him on the potty, have him sit for a few minutes. he has to learn when he has to go. what i did was i kept a journal i wrote down what time i sat him on ans whether or not he did anything and if so what. it worked great use underwear at home and pull ups for bedtimes naps and anytime you. encourage him to tell you when he has to go when your out. it wont happen right away. stay consistent same thing everyday and limit drinks after dinner to get to dry nights my son is almost four and still wet at night
