We have a problem here in two rather different uses of the term "State." To me, as an American, it means one of our 50. To some people, it means "sovereign state," which is another term for a country.

But if you are interested in the difference in American states, one thing is that our two houses of congress, the Senate and House of Representatives, are elected in different ways. The House is elected in proportion to the state's population, with no state getting less than one. So in terms of population, a representative who is the only one from his state has proportionally more importance even than a senator. But some of our larger land area states have smaller populations, and so if you meant large land area (Montana, for example), that's very different from large in population. New York, which is a good bit smaller than Montana, has a great many more people.

But the Senate is two from each state, regardless of size. And that means that the small states have disproportionate influence in the Senate. Those two senators representing Montana (or even Rhode Island) are exactly equal to those two senators representing California (large in both population and land area) or Alaska (the largest and the least populated).
