The effect of caffeine is as a 3'-5'-phosphodiesterase inhibitor. Cyclic AMP is produced in the body as part of the "Fight or flight" events but also in response to regular cell signalling. When cyclic AMP cannot be broken down, because caffeine is present, the effect is to simulate fight or flight. Chocolate and soda contain sugars, which are easily broken down into energy, making more and more cyclic AMP in a feedback enhancement loop. If your coffee lacks cream and sugar, or very low amounts thereof, the cyclic AMP will not be able to perpetuate itself despite the presence of caffeine. Caffeine prevents the enzymes in your cells from acting, but some AMP will break down without enzymatic action, due to oxidation and other metabolic processes which will scavenge the AMP for other molecules.

Caffeine is a stimulant and a drug. The side effects always include heart palpitations( racing heart) it also raises blood pressure, because it causes "vasoconstriction through out the body. For myself,I can drink hot or cold tea,and hot chocolate anytime of day,and fall asleep,no problems, with a mocha cappuccino forget it ! I think is the concentration of caffeine, even a "mental thing" like a psychosomatic response that can keep you from reacting the same way with all caffeine drinks.Like coffee means work, and tea or hot chocolate means relaxation time. Who knows, take care. SW RNP

Cut down on both, if you get like that. I get the same way when I drink coffee and some energy drinks (Oddly , not with Redbull) They are pretty normal reactions, as far as I know, cliche as they may be. You get like that because of the caffeine, or course, which is meant to "speed things" up, so you stay awake. If you do have problems with sleeping in the day, just get your normal hours of sleep.
Or it might be the sugar. As I reread your question, that coffee doesnt do that to you.

I experience that reaction with anything contaning caffein. Perhaps there may be a lower amount in coffee... which i doubt... or maybe it;'s a chemical reaction... You might want to see your Doctor... or just stop eating these things like I did.

people react differently to stimulants. if you have a hyperthyroid stimulants can really mess you up and make your heart race, so will having a hyperthyroid. These two factors combined can be harmful. It is not abnormal to feel that way when eating chocolate or caffeine but you may want to get your thyroid checked just to be certain.

Seriously if your are really having palpatations you should steer clear of caffeine....caffeine is a killer, i'm so glad i don't drink the stuff and steer clear of eating too much choclate....caffeine is like a drug it boosts every thing in the system, and that's why people drink it to stay awake.

Maybe its the combination of sugar and caffeine. I also think there might be more caffeine in Soda but not chocolate.
