Mormon is a term used to refer to adherents of the Latter Day Saint movement (a group of related religious sects), and most commonly to the movement's original and largest group, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.[1][2] According to church history, the term is derived from the Book of Mormon, a religious text that Joseph Smith, Jr. translated from ancient plates containing a history of the early inhabitants of the Americas that was compiled by a prophet called Mormon.[3] Mormons are not Protestants and do not consider themselves part of any larger branch of Christianity, but do consider themselves Christians.[4][5]

When Joseph Smith was asked about the basic beliefs of the church, he summarized the teachings and doctrines in 13 points, known today as The Articles of Faith of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Articles of Faith are:

We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.
We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.
We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.
We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.
We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.
We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.
We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.
We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.
We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.
We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

We don't go by the name Mormons anymore. We go by either Latter-Day saints, or LDS. The name of our church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints.

We worship God, as our Heavenly Father, and Christ as His son. We don't believe in the Trinity as most Christians do, so some will say we aren't Christian. We believe that God and Christ are two seperate bodies, the Holy Ghost being the third member of the Godhead, is a spirit. God and Christ both have bodies of flesh and bone. Christ, when he was resurrected showed his body to his disciples and to other followers.

We believed that the true church was led away from the truth after Christs death and wasn't brought back until a young boy, who was having problems with the religions at the time, read the bible. He read James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him. This prompted him to pray to know which church to join. He saw God and Christ and they told him to join none of the churches. He was later given the keys to the priesthood and restored the church as it was when Christ was on the earth.

We have what we call "articles of faith". They tell what we believe and how we try to live our lives. I'm posting a link that will tell you our beliefs and will help you know more of our church.

We do worship God, and Christ. Our worship might be different then other christians, but we believe in Christ. We follow His commandments and we believe that He allowed the truth to be brought back for the good of all mankind. Please take the time to look at the link. It will answer all (or most) of your questions. You can also contact me and I'll try to explain more.

The hebrew bible said that Israelites were the chosen people, the mormens want to believe that they are now, since their not hebrews they've invented their own religion. Its now referred to as church of later day saints, but actually its more like older day saints. Not only is it impossible for their God to have been a woman, but he had a bunch of wives. This, of course gives moral validity to their practice of bigomy here on earth, which the rest of the country believes is immoral.

-- just another point of view; not looking for best answer on this one.

"Mormon" is a nickname for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.... yeah, it's a long name, but there's method to the madness... We are the church of Jesus Christ, because that's who we believe in- Jesus is the Savior of the world. And the second part- "... of Latter-Day Saints"- That is who makes up the church- that's who the members are.

Regarding what we believe-
The man who founded and originally led the Latter-Day Saint Church was asked to write a short summary of what we believe. He wrote 13 statements, which are now called The Articles of Faith...
1) We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
2) We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.
3) We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
4) We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
5) We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of chands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.
6) We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.
7) We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.
8) We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated ccorrectly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.
9) We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.
10) We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.
11) We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.
12) We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.
13) We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

Remember these statements were written by a man with the equivalent of today's 3rd or 4th grade education, in the 1840's. Yes, we profess to believe these things, but just like any other group, we're not perfect at always being shining examples of these statements. As the saying goes among the LDS, "The Church is true, even if the people aren't."

The Mormons teach that Jesus was born in heaven as the spirit child of Elohim by one of his wives, and Jesus' brother was lucifer, who became Satan. Jesus is one of many gods.
