The car slipped due to ice and the pole had a protruding screw coming out of it that caused most of the damage. The bump is about 4 inches with a hole in the bumper

There is no rule stating that you MUST report it. That is one of the great insurance myths. Now if you damaged the pole, you should report it because that's considered property damage to the owner of the pole. But if the pole is fine, it's up to you as to whether or not you report the damage to your car. Get an estimate to see how much it is to fix. If you can pay out of pocket, go that route. If not, file on your insurance. Or if you don't mind riding around with a beat up bumper, that's fine too! It's up to you, my friend!

I would indeed leave my name & phone number if I accidently bumped into a car & caused damage, in any parking lot or anywhere. I'm an honest person & my parents raised me to be honest. Speaking of honesty, I went o a local grocery store yesterday, & while there, I bought a book of stamps, using my debit card. I hit "none" when the card machine asks if I wanted cash back. As the cashier handed me the stamps, she also handed me cash, that was the exact amount I just put on my card to pay for the stamps. As she handed me my receipt, & the cash, I immediately told her that I didn't want cash back. She laughed & said she got sidetracked listening to two of her co workers huddled in the corner, talking. I gave back the money & told her that I am an honest person, & lucky for her that I was, because there are some who would have taken the money & scooted out of the store. She just stood there & never said thank you or anything. Didn't she realize that she could have ended up having to make up for the shortage in her drawer at the end of her shift out of her own pocket? I did the right thing & gave the money back, but she could have thanked me.

If you want the insurance company to cover (any part of) the damages, then you need to inform them.

If not, and if you did not damage the pole, then the repair of the car is your problem.

Decide on the coverage vs. the insurance claim, vs. the cost to fix the car.

Only if you want the insurance company to pay for the repairs. Of if the pole itself was damaged.

If you didn't damage the pole, no you don't have to report it. If you did damage the pole, depending on who owns the lot, they may have something to say about it.

No. It's only IF you want to make a claim to get it fixed that you tell them.
