wooooooooo, calm down, first of all he will be somewhat sore but nothing he can't handle, secondly, he will more than likely have a cone collar on to keep him from pulling out the stitches, yes it is okay to leave him by himself for six hours and if you want to take him with you and your grandparents don't mind him coming then you can take him, also if you normally crate him then crate him; :) it sounds like you may be panicking for no reason, your vet will give you after care instructions and if there isn't any of the questions that you have asked here that he doesn't cover, ask. Everything will be okay and it's also perfectly understandable that you're a nervous and very loving mother to you dog =))

The first day he's home, he will probably be droopy from the anesthesia. He might be a little bit itchy for a few days in the area where the stitches are, and might try to lick at them. Keep an eye on him. If he won't leave it alone, you might have to have the vet give you a cone for his head. If you don't want to put a cone on him, you can try putting some Vicks Vapo Rub AROUND the area of the stitches, NOT ON THE STITCHES. The first time he licks the Vicks will be the last time he goes anywhere near that area for awhile. It won't hurt him, but it will taste and smell awful and make him wish he had the ability to spit. Just be careful not to get any on the incision or within an inch of it, because that would hurt like crazy.

If he's usually crated, leaving him crated is fine. If you usually leave him alone for six hours, leaving him for six hours is fine. If you'd normally bring him with you, bring him with you unless your grandparents have a dog that could potentially pull out the stitches during rough play.

Dogs are very stoic creatures. They are accepting of discomfort and barely notice small matters like belly stitches. If you don't make a big deal about it, aside from the itching, the dog probably won't even notice anything is different. Treat him like you always do. Just be careful with him around other animals and don't let him get too rambunctious until the stitches are taken out or dissolve.

Thank you for having your dog fixed. You are a responsible owner.

Dogs are usually very tired after any surgery, so don't expect to do a lot of playing with him that day. His recovery time will depend a lot on his age -- puppies tend to heal faster than grown dogs. My four-month-old puppy was running and jumping the next day after getting neutered, but this wasn't even wanted because jumping can tear out the stitches. If your dog is a year old or so, it may take him a few days before he's acting himself again.

Usually the vet offers you to buy a cone. This goes around his neck and head and makes it impossible for him to lick and pull at his stitches. It probably won't be necessary to crate him, but it is important that he isn't climbing a lot of stairs or jumping off of things, because this can tear out the stitches.

I wouldn't say it's a good idea to leave him alone for so long so soon after surgery. You might want to keep an eye on him because some dogs have adverse effects like throwing up after surgery -- you just never know. It might end up perfectly fine, but just to be safe, I would recommend bringing him with you.

If you have any more questions, be sure to talk to your vet!

He is going to be sore and very drowsy when he first comes home.

The vet techs will watch him while he "wakes up" from the anesthesia, and if he gives any indication of messing with his stitches, they will put a "cone" around his head so he'll be unable to reach them.

He will have to keep the cone on until the stitches are removed. That is usually 10-14 days after surgery. If your vet uses internal sutures, it will be easier for him and you! Ask about getting laser surgery done, as well. Laser surgery is not as painful for the dogs and heals faster than regular methods.

Your vet will likely send home pain medication for your dog to take for the first few days after his surgery. They may make him sleepy, so don't be concerned by drowsiness.

If he is used to being crated, it will not hurt him to stay for 6 hours while you visit your grandparents. He will need to be kept confined to limit his activity after the surgery anyway!

If, however, you feel better keeping him with you, that would be no problem. Just make sure you keep his activity limited and discourage jumping and running in the first few days after surgery.

Also, if he has traditional stitches, make sure he is not bathed until they are removed.

Good luck!

Some times the anesthesia makes the feel a little ill for a day or two. He will be just fine. If you have had a tooth pulled or tonsils out you did not want to eat or run races that day.. It makes a healthier happier animal and he will be happy to stay at home with you and not worry about female dogs that come into estrus. The reproductive organs is the most common area for cancer so he will have a good chance to live longer.

The dog will want to rest for a few days after he comes
home.
He will sort of do as much as he feels like doing without pain. Let him be the judge of what he can do. He won't overdo if he
feels some pain.
Some vets do not use any stitches. They only go through a small hole to do the job. He should be watched for a few days if he has stitches so he won't pull at them.
If he travels well, take him along to grandma's so he won't feel let alone. He will probably just lay and rest. He will be happier if he is with his family. Also someone will need to take him out to relieve himself.

some dogs do fine without any bothers. Others get sick and are weak during the recovery period. He will eventually pick at the stiches but then again it might depend on how he feels. I think it will be find in a crate for a couple of hours just for safety reasons. I would at least keep him in a crate when I wasn't at home.

My ex-fiance had his St.B fixed some years ago. The vet didn't provide a head shield so the poor dog kept licking the sore spot. His scrotum swelled up just enough that it looked like he still had testicles. Imagine this: my ex called the vet and very loudly complained that the operation was not preformed! These were vets he'd been using for 10 years!

Anyway, be sure to get the head cone. LOL

I won't leave him alone for the first couple of days, take him with you.

I would say that your dog probably won't want to pull the stitches out, but you should keep a close eye on him. I think that if you left him crated, that would tempt him to do that. If he does travel well, then you should take him with you just as a safety net. You don't know what he would do when you're not there.

He might be a little quiet for a day or so. He doesn't require any special treatment I wouldn't crate him unless that is what you usually do. Just watch the incision for signs of redness or swelling and keep it dry. You can leave him alone it's no problem. Your vet will give you instructions before you take him home. Most dogs do not bother their sutures.
