Its all mental, obviously. Basically, just do it. No excuses. No "Well I could just get a pizza for 5 bucks".

First, pick your battles and discipline yourself about one new thing at a time. It is a sure recipe for failure to try and change many things all at once, small steps first and when they become habit add the next one.
Second, write it down. Don't just say "I'm going to exercise" it's too vague, instead write down a specific exercise plan including aerobic conditioning and strength training. Don't get hung up on specific numbers for weight loss either. As you gain muscle and lose fat, your weight may stay depressingly constant, rather, use how you feel, look, and what the tape measure tells you.
Finally, remember that being too strict isn't any fun and will lead to falling off the discipline wagon, after a new discipline is mastered and habitual, don't worry about missing a day of training once in a while, or having a desert when you are trying to cut out the sweets (again, once in a while is key here).
Good luck with this, many young people don't have any self discipline these days and just taking the first steps says good things about you. I wish you well in the military branch of your choice.

If you are close to seventeen do not worry, they will do it for you... If you are much younger say 15, get on a school team sport, even if you do not play varsity you will gain some valuable fitness and lose some free time to waste. It takes 28 days of not doing something to break the habit, or as one article put it telling yourself not do do a thing about 100 times when the urge strikes. As for fitness if you cannot join a team, go to the local Y and look into classes. If you are too heavy you will not get to go to Military training and if you are just inside the line you will suffer more then needed in your basic so shed the weight. If overeating is the problem then get on a reasonable diet ASAP since time is pounds when your getting ready to go.

It's all about wilpower you need to quit things to get to the next level. I for instance told myself I'm going to quit food like i did cigarettes and I did, I'm losing weight and starting to like myself again. People pressure, you need to tell your friends that your tying to do something positive in your life so you can be happy. good luck it's hard to disclipline yourself! Oh and good for you for joining the military! Excellent!

Beth -
it is ALL about mind over matter.
In other words, it depends on the strength of your will.

You've no doubt heard of will-power.
What that is, is the ability to overcome anything through clear thought, focused on an objective.

Your diet plan?
You focus on losing weigh through mental discipline to:
>exercise a certain amount of time each day;
>restrict food intake to set number of calories;
>proper sleep habits.

Good luck.

I would join an ROTC club if you have one. There you will get exercise and discipline to help you lose weight. If one isn't available have your recruiter design a workout routine with you and another recruit from your school then you both can keep yourselves in shape. I hope that you plan on getting your diploma dropouts are not particularly wanted anymore.

You wont need to worry about that...what branch of the military? Army? You'll get all the discipline you need there. Unless of course you go Navy, or Air Force...no discipline in those units....I'm kidding of course...Sorry to all you Navy and Air Force peoples...I just couldnt resist...lol

With diet-you need to say yourself: STOP! I will eat healthy, with small portions at least 4 times a day. And you need to be strong by yourself. Believe-if you do this everything should be perfect :D

Discipline is just a commitment to a set of rules. Write down your rules, and vow never to break them. For example, write down a list of thing you are never allowed to eat, and stick with that. Also, write down what you are allowed to eat AND PORTION SIZES, and stick to it.
