My 9 year old son has a fever and he has a hard time taking medicine. We have tried mixing it with pudding & kool-aid, but he does not like the taste. When he takes the chewable tablets he just throws up after taking them. Any suggestions would be helpful. Are there any other medicines that he can take?

when my daughter was poorly they gave her tablet antibiotics the only way she could take it was cut into 4 and taken with yogurt with large pieces of fruit in maybe this would help if not try something like calpol 6+ which is suitable for up to 12 years and is available as a liquid and taste of strawberry. Hope this helps

You could ask for a suppository, but also you can ask a compounding pharmacy for a 'rub', which will absorb through pulse points. At nine, as well, he could probably take just a tablet, my 9yo does, she has always hated liquid and chewables, they are disgusting!

Alternatively, just keep him sucking on popsicles and ice chips, have him bathe two or three times a day, just soaking. let him wear some boxers and a cotton tshirt, and make sure the hhouse is cooler. If he is still uncomfortable, you can say "You know, if you're not comfortable, this is what will help"

More doctors are agreeing that you shouldn't medicate a fever unless it's over 103...because the AAP has said that fever is what helps cure colds, it's your immune systems response to invasion and by suppressing it you actually prolong the illness.

well i don't know of anything to do that you haven't done, unless you could try a little strawberry milk with the medicine where you can try to match the flavors. other wise you need to exsplain to him how serious this is and tell him he will have to go get a shot or something. my son was the same way we had to hold him down and then if he did take it he would cough till he threw up.
but he was only 2 and 3 then so i have no idea besides talking to him and trying to mix it with something that is close to the same taste as the medicine. but good luck to you and i hope you find a good way to do this!! all my luck!

Call your pediatrician and tell him your son has a tough time swallowing the medication...(my kids are the SAME WAY!) he may be big enough that he can take one Advil...they are small and sugar coated...and he may be able to swallow them....there is nothing you can try hiding medicine in that will not taste like medicine...i have tried it im sure!
If you want to try an herbal rememdy read up on Belladonna - i used that when my son was too young for other medicine.

Aarg, I am feeling for you. My nine year old son has started taking one regular strength gel cap. (Our doc said it was ok, but I would check with your first) After a terrible time with a tonsilectomy, he has sworn off ever taking any liquid or chewable medicine again. During that experience we also resorted to suppositories. I know it sounds extreme but a portion of an acetaminophen suppository may help with the fever. They are available over the counter but I would check with the doctor or the pharmacist for dosing. Good luck.

If he's not uncomfortable or in pain, there's really no need to supress the fever just to supress the fever. Fever is our friend. It's the body's first line of defense against a germ, and sometimes all you need to kick it out. Dress him lightweight and have him drink plenty of fluids.

If he's really miserable, go to the pharmacy and get Feverall Suppositories - they're like Tylenol in a suppository.

This one is really easy. Firstly, stop stressing him out by feeding him something that's going to make him throw up -he is already ill. Secondly get some lavender essential oil and add a few drops to a bowl of tepid water and let him wipe his forehead with it, or lay a cloth of it across his forehead. Lavender is specifically for fevers to reduce temperature. While you are fetching that from the pharmacy you could get him some soft peppermint sweets to help settle his stomach, they are also cooling.

Have you tried having him swallow pills whole? The liquid tastes nasty, as does the chewables. At 9 he should be able to swallow the Tylenol JR that is whole pills. You can't taste them if you drink the water or juice right away.

I had this problem with my son but he didnt throw up. Have you tried getting him to swallow? I finally taught my son to swallow, first starting with a tic tac. He can safely take a regular strenth tylonal if he is 9 years old. Get the caplets they go down easier. Good luck!

I think it is called FEVERALL-not sure comes in a red box starts with the word fever I know. It is a suppository. If he cant take nothing by mouth, that is what the doctor will say a suppository.
