Union Negotiations....also cost of living, tax base, how many police per population, Specialties. All kinds of things go into that formula. I started out NYPD at 25k with a top pay of 58k. Long Island guys were getting over 90k at top pay.

I think it depends on demographics and cost of living more than anything else.
Sure, a police officer who works in Monterey, California, a town with relatively little crime, might mike $100,000 a year as base pay. Of course a 700 square foot, 40 year old house in the same town might cost $750,000 to buy.
On the other side, a cop in Billings, Montana might make base pay of $30,000 a year but cost of living is much cheaper.
It's all relative.

Hmm....you should have a unique definition of the be conscious 'appreciate' than I discovered turning out to be up. keep in ideas, this is more effective risky to be a small city cop. My nearest backup is ninety miles away by potential of aircraft (no roads). If I commence to lose a wrestle i will keep dropping it. this is unlike interior the flicks even as they supply up once you're down. They supply up once you're useless. Edit: i change into with a huge city branch. besides the actual shown reality that we were busier on an frequent shift, I pass over the protection of having somebody else at the different end of the radio.

It's not that they make more, it's just that the cost of living in a small town is much less than a big city.

That's not true...lol...
my first job as a cop, I made $8.94/hr. in a town of 2000 people in Colorado and Denver P.D. cops were starting out at roughly $38,000/yr. This was in 1996 - which by the way was when Clinton had his huge Law Enforcement grant programs...

They usually don't (not is California anyways). Big cities are where big tax dollars are. I live in a town of 32,000 people where officers make about $36,000 (close friend works here). In the big city nearby (18 minutes away), my husband makes about $80,000.

If this was true, small town cops wouldn't leave for bigger towns.

They typically dont where I am at. It depends on the tax base. Typically larger areas can affort to pay more and recruit better trained officers.
