Can you get Emla from the pharmacy, where you are?? USE it, if you can't buy it over the counter, get a prescription. My daughter used to have to get a lot of blood work done when she was smaller and hated it. Now she is a real pro, but the Emla is the answer. At first I applied it and never told her where we were going. Of course she knew once we arrived and started to get upset. I assured her that this new thing on her arm would make it fine. This works once, but that is fine, they will be better next time. She was surprised to find that it was no big deal. I did the insides of both arms to be sure we didn't hit one that wouldn't work. Now she is there to counsel small children, and their parents when she goes in and finds an upset child. Oh and she only did the Emla for a few months and said she was fine now!

Once we switched to Emla life changed!!! Well worth it, specially if there is any chance he is oging to be having more down the road!

I'm in the same boat. I'm going to tell him just before it is done, while we are in the office. I don't want him to be totally shocked by the needle when they come in, but I don't want him to have to think about it for days either. I will promise an ice cream or something to help make it go better.
Good Luck.

My daughter used to have an same reaction, even to this present day and he or she is very almost 40! maximum acceptable suggestion is to inform him earlier hand, tell him you'd be there with him, and ask the health center you're having the attempt executed, to apply the thinnest needle conceivable. in certain circumstances they use the former "known" and that is thicker. i might want to also request the "maximum acceptable" technician they have, because some human beings really botch at drawing blood, others you not in any respect knew the needle went in. i might want to tell him you'll cope with him later on to lunch, or perhaps with is "particular" to him so he has that to seem ahead to. It helped me dealing with those numerous steps, notwithstanding the outcome become an same, a lot of tears and worry. a minimum of you may provide it a attempt! best of success!

I would not tell him in advance. He will just freak out and not want to go into the doctor's office at all. Wait and let the doctor or nurse explain it to him. Maybe they can also give you a "shot" too, so that he can see that it dosent hurt? I've heard of doctors doing that for kids and parents.

I usually don't tell my son about shots and things like that until shortly before. I personally think the fear of the unknown for a while is worse than the few minutes of screaming right before.

Good luck!

Tell him good things about the blood test, but not now, tell him on the day. Make the doctor to tell good things about it.
Surely it gives him mental strength.

I think you should tell him. Surprising him by this would only cause him not to trust you---the one who he should trust in over all others. Just tell him you love him and want him healthy and it has to be done.
