How? I'm sick right now and my dog always comes on to me, licks me, sits with me, trys to cheer me up, and when I was a kid I hurt myself (I forget how) I was crying and my dog jumped on my lap and cheered me up. How do dogs know when your sick or hurt?

I would guess by body language and smell. Dogs are social animals and much of their communication is through body language. (But don't forget their vocalizations. Try this with your dog: A dog's laugh sounds like a rapid pant. You must have heard it while playing with him. Do a dog laugh at him & see what happens :-)) Believe me, your dog knows when you're happy, angry, sad or even sick.
Also, Dogs' sense of smell is several hundred times greater than humans'. Dogs have noticed cancer on people & it's thought to be through smell.

Well, if your best friend in the while entire world was sick, you would just have to look at them and you would know that they're sick. Even if you just talked on the phone with them, you would probably tell that they were sick. Well, dogs are the same way. You're their best friend and they can tell when you're upset or sick, and since dogs are such good friends, they hate to see you like that, so they think they can fix everything that's wrong by showing you that they care!(Licking you and cuddling with you!)

I love my Golden Retriever and whenever I am not feeling "normal" she is right there to kiss and cuddle with me. If I don't/won't respond, she continues until I give in and pet her or hug her and guess what, I feel instant tranquility! Gotta love our pets!

I believe that every human emotion has a smell to dogs, like they say fear has a smell we sweat a small amount chemistry all the time ,and dogs read it like a language. combine with body language.

Dogs sense your energy, when you're happy, sad, angry etc. Many dogs know the emotions of their owners better than the owners themselves.

Usually they can smell that you are sick. They can detect the tiniest change in your odor due to illness. Also, they pick up on your emotions when you are sick, tired, sad, or angry and react to them.
