It depends on what kind of hitch you have. If you have a bumper hitch you will not have much capacity. If you have a frame hitch you will have much more capacity. However, without knowing your engine size I could not give you an exact answer.
Do be aware that towing capacity means different things to different people. Pulling capacity is one thing, and actual tongue weight is another thing. Be sure you use the right calculation for your vehicle. If you are pulling more than a light utility trailer or a small boat, then you need a frame-welded hitch. I have a parts yard full of ruined bumpers from vehicles where the owner thought he had more capacity with his (or her) bumper hitch than he (or she) really did.

You can tow a trailer up to 3500 lbs using the bumper, but no more. Trailers over 3500 lbs will require a weight distributing hitch that is mounted to the frame, if you do install a FRAME mounted hitch it will tow 4940 lbs with an automatic transmission, and 2880 lbs with the manual transmission. Straight from the owner's manual.

'96 to '01 Jeep Cherokee's Sport,classic,etc, with the 4.0 inline 6 & automatic transmissions will tow up to 4000 lbs.
That is,with a frame hitch.That's total weight.
