While in jail, inmates usually don't have all that much else to do other than study laws regarding thier own or someone else's cases. This is how we get those "jailhouse lawyers". They study the cases to try to improve thier chances of getting off of a charge or getting released sooner, or even making thier own living conditions better while inside the facility.

One major reason why inmates write writs for other inmates, is because inmates believe lawyers really don't do anything for them. They are stuck in jail and they think that the lawyers really don't care about them sitting in there and take thier sweet little time taking care of thier stuff. These "jailhouse lawyers" know this, and so they will write the writs for the other inmates for several reasons. Some may actually give a care about the situation of another inmate, but generally they will do it to receive some other form of compensation like commisary money, or if they succeed on getting the inmate out, they will expect some money be sent into them for commisary or other things.

tHEY HAVE BEEN INCARCERATED FOR SO LONG, AND SO MANY TIMES THAT THEY KNOW THE LAW INSIDE AND OUT. ALSO, THEY HAVE NOTHING TO DO BUT STUDY LAW, SO THEY BECOME "EXPERTS"
