RE:
what would be a good thank you gift for nurses?
Its the first time my daughter has been in the hospital, and the nurses have been so great to her and my family. So what would be a nice gift for all the nurse on the floor?

Depending on how much you want to spend there are some good options. Remember that people are more than their occupations, meaning that nurses and doctors are probably tired of receiving stuffed bears, figurines, mugs or anything else with medical insignia on it (the same way teachers hate getting coffee mugs filled with candy and porcelain apples).
The food idea is great. If you want to go a step beyond a platter, see if a nearby restaurant can provide a few buffet dishes that can be left in the floor's break room. The items should be easy to eat on the run, but it might be nice to deviate from the normal sandwiches.
Ask one of the nurses if it would be appropriate for you to hire a masseuse for 2-3 hours to be in the break room giving out 10-minute massages to people on their break.
Ask one of the nurses where/ if they hangout after work. Maybe you can sponsor a happy hour for them to unwind at a local bar.
If you want to give individual gifts maybe a pair of movie ticket vouchers per person would be appropriate, or for a bigger gift couple it with a gift certificate to a restaurant. Or- get gift certificate to blockbuster and write a personal note encouraging them to relax and have a "blockbuster night".

Since all the nurses who took care of your daughter will not be there at the same time, find out which nurses attended to your daughter while she was in the hospital and get them Starbucks gift cards. Bringing food was my first thought too, but you would probably miss 2/3 of the people who took care of her by bringing something that will only be enjoyed by whoever is working that shift.

there's lot's of things that would be nice...(any small token of appreciation would be greatly appreciated, most people are just happy to have their hard work acknowledged)
but here's a few ideas:
a nice thank you card
edible goodies (i wouldn't make home-made ones, just cuz i personally don't eat food from people i don't know well)...but your local bakery will have lot's of goodies
a homemade gift from your daughter (this could be a card or drawing or some other crafty project she'll enjoy)
some pretty hair barrettes or scrunchies (nurses almost always wear their hair up while working)
relaxation type things that all busy women enjoy (candles, bath salts, lotions, etc....nice hand lotions are a good idea as nurses are constantly washing their hands and their skin gets really dry)

I would suggest that you go to your local florist & have them make up a beautiful floral bouqet for the nurses. I worked in a hospital & many times I would stop by the nurse's station when I saw a floral bouquet. They were always sent by patients/ patient's families, etc. A floral bouquet would be a great way to say thank you.

Food is always appreciated, especially if it's the kind someone can pick up on the go. Sweets are good, but I've found that nurses are often strapped for time and appreciate something savory like sandwiches or bagels or something that won't quickly spoil.
Something else that will be greatly appreciated is a handwritten card. It doesn't have to be grand poetry - just a simple note thanking them for caring for your daughter.

I think you have been given a lot of terrific ideas. Please do try to make any food you choose - if you choose that - a healthy selection. It's hard if you're trying to keep fit - or get fit - to be tempted with sugary treats.
Whatever you get, I agree it's really appreciated if you write a letter to the hospital administrators and perhaps send a letter to the editor of the local paper, praising the nurses. That is meaningful for them in the long run.

If "a lot" then bagels, if morning crew; cookies if evening crew. If you only want to gift one or two special ones? I would say a pedicure/foot massage gift certificate - they're on their feet all day. Short of that? A monetary gift to a local charity on their behalf.
