well in my opinion a foodie is someone that enjoys preparing and eating many different kinds of cuisines. A gastronome would be a foodie that is also interested in the history, and a culinarian would be a gastronome that is interested in the "why" of how foods and seasonings work with each other.

Someone who is very interested or has a great love for food. Chefs come under this as all the work revolves around food.
There is a good definition here from foodie.com:
"The foodie lives to eat, and eating to live is definitive boredom. A true foodie clings to all things culinary. . . . To find the perfect cheese or the best macaroon recipe is life's work."

It's kind of a tough one, but here's my definition. You love all things food related. Not just eating, but knowing about restaurants, the chefs, silently critiquing the food, if you think the sommelier doesn't know what they're talking about, the table presentation isn't right, history of the food and cuisines you're eating or making, keeping up on the latest trends in food, the best places to go, cuisines of certain cities, everything.
I'd consider myself a foodie. I'm always reading up on what chef went where, who opened a new restaurant, which one folded, if there's too much of a certain cuisine in the valley. I could go out to a very nice restaurant where the food was great, but I can still silently nit-pick on certain things. You have to be totally immersed in all things relating to food, not just what you're eating.
To me, that's a foodie.
