I tried contacts for the first time a week ago and I love them but they really irritate my eyes, they are sore, dry and feel like they have an eyelash in them. I've cleaned my contacts and there's nothing in them! I have ACUTE ASTIGMATISMS in both eyes, apparently for a few years, but my opth. NEVER TOLD ME UNTIL TODAY... he says it's not bad enough that I need special contacts, but these regular ones (acuvue advance) really IRRITATE MY EYES. I want to keep wearing contacts, does anyone have ANY SUGGESTIONS? Thank you so much in advance to anyone willing to HELP ME!!! ^_^

You need to contact the doc that dispensed the contacts and let them know that you are having irritation and problems with them. The doc can't know that you are having problems unelss you call him/her and tell him. Update the doc and see what he recommends to correct the problem.

I've been wearing contacts for a very, very long time. In fact I started out in junior high in the late 70s when they only had hard ones (imagine a solid disk!).

Everyone has issues over the years. Many doctors, many brands. MANY doctors have different theories and ideas.

First of all the whole thing when people say "I can't wear contacts" is usually false. They just are not doing it right. So when you first start wearing them or change brands it sometimes takes a bit of time to get used to them. If they bother you take them out and wear them here and there. You will get used to them eventually.

Years ago I changed docters and the new one said I have astigmatism. She was amazed that I had never been told this as you just don't develop this overnight..... it takes years. I have since done research and have found this to be true. The special contacts only effect how you see, not how they fit. If you can see with the ones you have special contacts are not necessary.

One common mistake docter's make is in the diameter of the contacts. To keep your eyes moist everytime you blink the contacts spin a bit.If they are just a tiny bit too wide your eyes will be dry. Different brands let air to your eyes (gas exchange) better than others. Daily wear (take out everyday and clean) tend to be thicker and heavier than extended wear (wear them for a couple of weeks) and throw them away. Though you can still take the extended out if they bother you. Once you get used to contacts you can wear most anything though. I changed brands last week and it is only today that they feel great and I forgot I had them in.

Go back to the doctor and tell him your problem. Ask about gas exchange and diameter. Every office has TONS of free samples of different types for you to try if you ask. Even the super expensive ones. But price is not always the best indicator. And every office has tons of free samples of different solutions.

Though if you go to someone who has an office like in a medical park and bills himself as an "opthamologist" not an optometrist you may have one of those guys who are tight with the samples. The kind that will charge you $200 for the "complete care" package. If your contacts still don't work take your prescription elsewhere. (Always ask for a written copy as once you find what works you can buy them cheaper elsewhere) Most offices when you explain your issue will give you a quick free run through to check it.

In this day and age anybody can wear contacts. Though this sounds complicated it's not really. It can just take some time. Honestly, if you have any questions email me as I can relate and no one should be thinking that they might not be able to wear them.

Many times just switching the brand of the lense can help. Also, I just started wearing the Advance, and it did seem almost "thicker" at first than the acuvue II that I used to wear. Perhaps just swithching models might help. Something else to check is whether you're allergic to the solution you're using. Try switching brands.

Most importantly, contact your eye doctor, as he will know best what to do for you.

Well it sounds like they are either drying out or not fitting properly. I would try using clerz plus or blink-n-clean to see if they help with this feeling. If they are not helping have your doctor recheck the fit and maybe fit you with something else

Unfortunately, you may be one that is just unable to wear contacts for whatever reason. Have you talked to your doc about this particular problem?
