Okay - Please let me know the breed. The story behind it.
I personally own an Akita - He has protected me twice, both times in woods. (one when he was only four months old the other when he was nine months) At nine months these dogs are bigger than most. (He was 100% right to protect me the second time - There really was danger, he just barked and growled but it did the trick) So, please let me know how your dog has protected you. Thanks.

Years ago ( my dog has since passed away) I had a Chow Chow. On 2 occasions he protected me, at least he thought he was. Once was in our apartment, the door was unlocked and my husband came home late one night and failed to turn on the light upon entering. Sabbath (dog) had him pinned against the wall before anyone knew what was happening. The second time I was out walking Sabbath at night when someone started running towards me. He barked and growled and was very aggressive sounding. When the person got close enough for me to realize it was someone I knew I had to yell at them to stop running and stand still. I have no doubt that if I was ever in danger Sabbath would have taken care of me!

I have two dogs-a lab/dalmation cross and a german shepherd cross. One night a few years ago I put them outside to go potty before bedtime. When I let them back in they both ran straight for the window barking and growling (very uncharacteristic). I turned off the lights and peeked out the window. There were 3 guys walking down the street. I watched them walk towards the end of the block and then turn back around and walk back up. They were stopping at all the houses along the way and shining a flashlight on all the ones marked "for sale". I finally observed them go into a house and that's when I called the cops. Long story short they had stolen items from almost every house in the neighborhood and the house they were in they turned up the gas and left it on..guess they wanted to destroy all evidence. My house was the only one untouched. Had the dogs not alerted me..that night might have turned out drastically different for everybody.

It really depends. If you have signs warning of a GUARD DOG who has been trained in protection, certainly not. If you have a house dog, it might get tricky. Many breeds are under attack right now due to media hype and false information, such as pit bulls and rottweilers, and if you have one of these breeds, you must take extra care (it's like a holocaust against these dogs in some places, tho there are less than 10 dog fatalities every year...). Your BEST BET is to either get a protection dog and place prominant signs warning of a protection dog (pit bulls are NOT good at this, they are human submissive and see humans as friends), or to get a security system. In today's world, WE PROTECT OUR DOGS, it should not be the other way around.

I have a miniature pinscher for the past 2 months and she's constantly protecting me. Since alerts me when people walk in the door. When we're outside walking late at night she barks at every sound and listens. When I'm at home she is just alert with noises and sounds.

I really like that, especially since at times i'm unaware of things, people, or sounds. I think with me she's the only person she does not bark at when I enter, as to my boyfriend and his family she's constantly barking at them or growling.

Even though she's a toy dog she acts like she's a large dog in a small dog's body...guess that's part of the personality with the breed.

One time in my hometown, I had been given an Australian Shepard Cow Dog and one night on one of her nightly roams through the house, she started barking and woke me up, which was not like her at all, and I heard all of the other dogs down the street start to bark too, mind you this is about 3:30 in the morning, I got up the next morning and saw that someone had tried to break into my house.

My German Shepherd protected me from a brown bear in Montana.

My parents had a small ranch above Boulder. I was out fishing on a little mountain stream, the dog happily coursing around behind me.
The bear was up on the trail and when it tried to approach me the dog put herself between me and it. When it persisted she circled to the side and started nipping into it's hindquarters.

Really surprised me that she knew how to get in there, then pull back to avoid that swinging paw!

Ultimately, after what seemed like several minutes (it was probably no more than 20 seconds), the bear decided that dog avoidance was better than a lunch of my mess of fish and clambered up the hill. My dog came back to my side -- quite satisfied with herself.

My german Shepherd attacked two border collies that cam after me and my husband when we were walking. These dogs came running at us barking and growling. She alerted and barked and growled back to warn them not to come closer. well they did and she beat them up and scared them away. I checked them out after the incident cuz the vet tech in me wouldnt let me walk away from a hurt dog, even if they tried to attack me in the first place, and I was willing to take them to the vet if they were hurt badly-they just had some minor scratches and cuts. The other dog we had with us (my brothers dog) she helped a little but Dakota did most of the work. If the other dogs hadnt been fat furry dogs they might have been seriously injured, but they knew better than to come after us after that (they were our neighbors dogs). She is a great guard dog and no one comes near our house if we arent home because of her.

I had a saint bernard who was very protective. Once she heard a loud noise outside. I was sitting on floor (we had been playing) and she knocked me down and straddled me. She was facing the door and growling. I think this was the only way she knew to save me, the thing making the noise would have to get past her to get to me!!! It turned out to be a cat knocking something over, but she proved to me she would be there if I really needed it!!! So sad to say, she has died and to this day I miss her very much

he bites anyone i tell him too. He is not mean but he is very protective, my dad gives me a hug and my dog lunges. He has never bit anyone but he gives them a fair warning. One time my mom was boiling eggs on the stove and she forgot about them. The water evaporated and the pan got so hot the eggs actually started smoking. My dog started barking and they kept yelling at him to shut up, finally my mom went into the kitchen to check and she came back with a fire extinguisher.

My cocker spaniel Latte was a real protector. When I had eye surgery he sniffed the eye drops before he would let my husband give them to me. He also would smell the food and drink my husband gave me after surgery.

Also, one time an acquaintance stuck her hand through the car window and he went ballistic. She turned out to be a real creep. I should have trusted Latte's judgment, it would have saved me a lot of grief.

One time my husband and I went for a drive and when we got home the side door was open and Latte was standing there waiting for us. He was on point, like he was guarding the place in our absence.
