I am thinking of going to Scotland for a weekend break for my girlfriend's 30th bday, but am not sure where to go. Where is best for a romantic break, but will need to be close to transport links as I will either be geeting national express or train up! (Aint so romantic, but adds to the surprise!)

I like Edinburgh, but Glasgow is my favourite. It has a bit more 'edge' to it. Plenty to do and see.

I would recommend the Glasgow Hilton. Location by the M8 isn't great but the hotel and staff are super. It has a great (but expensive) Italian restaurant which is perfect for a romantic dinner for two (with the bedroom just upstairs.....!)

PS. I live in Aberdeen. Wouldn't recommend it. Sorry Scott.

I've just come back from Edinburgh from my 30th Birthday - I loved it, such a beautful city, the people are extremely friendly and welcoming. we went to the witchery restaurant on the actual day - very romantic, near the castle - have a look at their website! There's lots to see during the day - you can buy all day siteseeing passes from the tourist office on Princes street - there are lots and lots of pubs/bars and clubs - live music plays/comedy clubs etc. You can get cheap flights up there with easy jet so I would certainly consider flying as an option also. Have a look last minute.com. Think a very sweet idea that you're surprising her.

Edinburgh - it's the most beautiful city. Even has a beach if you take the bus along to Portobello.
