Has anyone had this happen to them:

I just recently lost a good job. They had me scheduled for work on my day of worship, which happens to be Sunday, when they knew I would be in church. I requested to have the day, and/or for them to change the schedule to accomodate my sincerely held religious beliefs. I even offered to work extra hours during the week, or change one of my other days off to help the company. I advised my supervisor and Human Resources that I would be in church on that day. The y told me if I did not come in on Sunday, they would "end my assignment"<---(temp agency).

My friend i am not here to criticize you on your religion or on your day of worship but Sunday is the first day of the week. We know the day of worship is the seventh day.
Exodus 20:11
For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

The day of worship is the Sabbath and the Lord kept the Sabbath Mark 2:28 says he is the Lord of the sabbath and he was in the synagogue every sabbath. But yet it is still wrong to fire someone for that but somehow in this world especially America where there is a separation between church and state many people have no respect for religion. If you chose this job you would have had to deal with the consequences at sometime.

Well, not 'fired' but was given a choice of show up or ship out. I chose to show up--sometimes you have to adjust what is more important--feeding the kids or going to a different service. Many churches have multiple options for worship--including evening or alternate day worship. Not the same, no, but hopefully you would be able to explain your desire to attend service, offer the other alternatives you mentioned and not get into such a situation very often. My hubby does hiring and specifically asks about religious worship times and where many say 'none' he has had some very devout Muslims that must be off one day during the week for a specific prayer time and he does his best to make sure he accommodates them. Many employers will ask during an interview when you are available to work and if you do not state your worship times as a non-available time right away then the employer might hire you with the express intention of using you for the Sunday AM shift.
If your employer 'knew' when you would be in church then they may have been trying to find a way to terminate your relationship with the company without firing you. There are a number of loopholes employers use to get you to quit (you see--you refused to work available hours) in order to save on unemployment payments.
Good luck with your next job.

It is perfectly legal in the US. The job is to be performed on the days needed. If you are working for a temp agency, it's even more incumbent on them to have someone at the job site. You're complaining about having a job that doesn't meet your needs. Find a different job. Go to church on Sunday night. The capitalist system offers no advantages for a particular religion. Asking for it represents your right, their refusal represents their right.

Muslims worship on Fridays. Do you think American businesses could function if all the Muslims disappeared 20% of the work week?

Sorry Charlie. Most states are "free will" and can fire just because. I am in healthcare and a Born Again Christian. My job entails that I work every Friday,Sat,Sun. Thus I can't go to church on Sunday which is really important to me. I work in the Bible Belt and almost everyone I work with wants sundays off fo Church. If we all had Sundays off the world here would die. There would be almost no healthcare workes to take care of them. Since I work everyweekend, I go to church on Weds. nights, bible study on Monday nights and prayer group on Tues. nights. I have had to accomadate my religious beliefs to my work life and this is how I solved it. As a Christian, God isn't only there on Sundays. HE is not going to forget me just because I go to work on Sundays. I wish I didn't have to sork Sundays but that the way it is. I am always looking for a job that doenst involve Sundays and I have to accept that for rightnow, This is where God wants me and when the time is right, I will have Sundays off.

I don't believe that you acted in good faith, as a temp job they likely made known to you beforehand the requirements and you should have stated that there was a conflict before you were hired. Let us know if the situation was otherwise but I think the termination was legal. Lets be real Christians, this is not likely a case of persecution or racial discrimination but in fact was likely deceptive on the part of the poster here when he falsely agreed to terms that he didn't want to or intend on keeping, this comes from a Christian by the way.

Well if you were a regular full-time employee my opinion would be that you were severely wronged by your employer. Working with a temp agency is different because they are committed to getting somebody out there to do the work. That is how they butter their bread, so to speak. In this scenario, you are the temp agency's product. So they need you to show up.

When I managed a team of people, I always tried to work with them on these types of things. I had a muslim on my team and Ramadan fasting was tough on him for sure. By three-thirty I could tell all he wanted to do was go home. Finally I worked out with him that he could cut out an hour early and work the time back in after the holiday.

Despite my personal abhorance for organized religion, I don't like it when companies put their own interests before their employees core beliefs.

Generally, if you are not available to work the hours they need you (for whatever reason), they will fire you and hire someone who is available. Most states are at-will states, meaning they can terminate your employment for any or no reason at all (with some exceptions revolving around whistle-blowing, work injuries, discrimination, etc.) While I'm sure there was SOMETHING they could have done to accommodate you, you were only a temp. So your continued employment was not valuable enough to them to work around your schedule. I'm sure this has happened to lots of people.

That is religious descrimination. I know I had a problem telling my mom when i worked for her that I couldnt work on Sundays, and so did a very nice, hardworking Orthodox Catholic I worked with. I know we aggrivated her a lot, but it came down to what my coworker said. "This is the day of my Lord, and that alone, everyother day I will work for you."

I would get a good lawyer and sue, so as to make and example, especially since you gave them prior notice. You want to prevent this from happening again.

That's messed up. My last job would accomodate for at minimum the time you were supposed to be in church if not just give you the entire freakin day off. Although the job I have now - they just tell you tough luck. Kinda sucks, though.
